You can feel the edge of summer rolling up like a beach towel, ready for the sand to be shaken out by the cool, dry breeze of fall. So let’s look ahead, briefly, since Ashvegas is all about the music. You kids got your calendars handy?

Friday – The bluegrass bashings of the Avett Brothers at the Orange Peel. These guys kick f**king ass. You must see them live. That’s all that needs to be said.

Sept. 12 – Country music star Josh Turner performs at the Mountain State Fair. The show costs five bucks. That’s all. You’ll spend more on a turkey leg and fried Twinkie.

Sept. 29 – Flat Rock Music Festival, featuring an array of music including Hobex and a favorite of mine called CX-1. Also, Mad Tea Party is playing the Grey Eagle on this date, and they’re getting hot right now. As the Mountain Express expertly noted recently, they’ve hired Dolph, the marketing wiz behind the Avett Brothers, and made a few other changes that have them sizzlin’ right now.

Sept. 30 – The fading Indigo Girls still have a legion of fans, and they’ll be playing historic McCormick Field of all places. The new owners of the Asheville Tourists want to bring more entertainment like this to the ballpark venue, but this will be the first test. Should be interesting.

Oct. 10 – Buddy Guy still rocks on, and he’ll be taking on the Orange Peel. Damn, we love the blues. And we love this Guy.

Starting Oct. 19 – The fall edition of the Lake Eden Arts Festival is back, with the likes of Richie Havens and Kellin Watson, just to pick two of more than two dozen. If you’ve never been, you should go. Half the allure is the beautiful lakeside setting.
