What to say about news reader Katie Couric, who will take the helm of CBS News tonight? It’s all pretty much been said. Still, we’ll muse a little.

It is a bit beyond us as to why CBS has spent millions of dollars to promote Couric. They’re desperate for a ratings boost, certainly, yet fewer and fewer people watch the network news. The CBS chair is perhaps the most storied news reader’s chair of all, so we suppose that’s why people are curious about Couric.

It’s a bit sad, really, that we’re talking about Couric as “the first woman ever” to anchor network news all by her lonesome. This is 2006, isn’t it?

We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of newswoman Couric turns out to be. We know she can act and empathize – we’ve seen her do enough stupid stuff on that old morning show. Now we’ll see if she can direct a news operation and deliver a relevent news product in a day and age when competition is tighter than ever.

We’ll watch for a week and see. What do you think?

An ambitious little Virginia girl might surprise us all.

    Actually, I wish her luck.

Ok – you asked so here goes : I think she’s just another fat girl reading the news. All of this ego stroking by network TV makes me a little ill. Before all of this started I thought a Katiecouric was a cocktail special at the Flying Frog. Perhaps we should focus a bit less on the news announcer and a bit more on the content and quality of the news – hint hint CBS ?
