Mumpower for Congress
WLOSers said that Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower announced his candidacy for the 11th Congressional District on the morning news today. Scoopalicious!
WLOSers said mountain Republicans have been waiting desperately for somebody, anybody, to come out and declare that they’d be taking on U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, who beat Charles Taylor last time round. Terrie Foster said the “soft-spoken” Mumpower was calling himself a conservative and calling Shuler a liberal.
WLOSers got reaction from the the heads of the Buncombe County Democratic and Republican parties. Guess what they said? The Dem lady said Shuler’s great. The Repub dude said Mumpower’s great.
Meantime, Russ Bowen went down to Hooterville to have a glass of tea with the Henderson County GOP chairman, Spence Campbell, who said he might even run for congress, too, but Mumpower’s a good start.
In top crime news…
Deputies in Henderson County charged two people with a stabbing down in Edneyville last week… A fugitive escapee from a Kentucky prison is still on the loose. The guy crashed his truck in an Oakley apartment complex, took off on foot and hasn’t been seen since… Two Waynesville men died in an early morning wreck when their vehicle ran off Hwy. 23/74 in Jackson County and hit a tree… And a Murphy man has been charged with killing his brother.
Murder trial continues
Charu Khumaria has been following the trial of John Beavers, the guy accused to shooting Dr. Brian Ling to death last year at Mountain Kidney Associates. Charu said there was dramatic testimony in court from doctors who worked with Ling who rushed in right after the shooting. The docs tried everything they new to save Ling’s life. One doc said he tackled the shooter and wrestled the gun from him. A woman in the office described hearing Ling cry out, “No! No! No!” Charu said testimony showed that Beavers brought in a fully loaded pistol and emptied it in the shooting. The docs who subdued Beavers said they heard him say, “My work is done.” They used medical tape to tie him up until police arrived.
In other news…
A student at Enka Middle School was suspended for bringing a lighter shaped like a gun to school. Dummy…. Pat Simon investigated the theft of cell phones, purses and other personal items from a locker room during a junior varsity volleyball game between Owen and Madison. The game was held at Owen…. And John Le did a story about big horses at the Mountain State Fair.
In still other news…
NewBuck, which makes Buck Stoves, will add 70 jobs over the next three years in Mitchell County… The fall fire season is just around the corner and forestry officials want to be sure everybody knows the statewide burning ban remains in effect until we get some effing rain… And Sheraldo said they’re doing a lot of work to spruce up the Transylvania County Courthouse. O, and they’re adding security cameras.

I learned last week not to leave my purse for even a minute, even in a private office. Ladies, don’t leave your stuff in unlocked lockers. Sadly, thiefs are everywhere.
Of course, I’ve managed to be both a victim and a criminal in the space of one week. Dets on my bloggie soon.
I always thought Carl Mumpower was the author of this blog….and that is what I still believe. Jason Sandford sounds like a made up person. I hope if Carl wins he can still maintain this blog.
