The Huffington Post’s The Blog notes the Asheville Tea Party gun giveaway:

Without a word of sympathy for the victims, the group’s website also offers as a solution to future mass shootings an article urging teachers to carry and gun-free zones to be banned.

The Asheville Citizen-Times also has a story:

The Asheville Tea Party is taking heat from the Huffington Post over a new fundraiser to raffle a semi-automatic rifle similar to one used in the Connecticut school shootings.

Really, what would be the logistics of teachers and school administrators being armed? How would guns be safely stored in a classroom or school building? How much training would a teacher need to safely handle and effectively use a gun. (Like they don’t have enough to do already.) Are they going to be holstered? It’s a sick fantasy to imagine that a more heavily armed public would prevent events such as Sandy Hook.

The principal could have had a firearm locked in her desk drawer. It only takes one armed good guy (with decent aim), to stop an incident like this.

Ahh, I see. A well-armed good guy. So, all we have to do is determine who the good guys are. Makes good sense. I assume that you will just let me decide?

Don’t talk in circles dude. How many teachers and principals have killed their students?

Again — what are the logistics? Principal down the hall. Rushes to get gun. Unlock, load, etc. Principal has the wherewithal and gun skills to rush to the classroom and pick off the bad guy. Nobody caught in the crossfire. The principal, in addition to his or her masters or phD in education and years of experience in teaching and administration, is a skilled marksman. Dirty Harry in a pantsuit. Having dispatched the bad guy, the principal blows the smoke from the gun barrel, holsters it, and then resumes the mundane tasks of school day. It is a sick fantasy.

It’s no sick fantasy. I’ve carried a concealed weapon for 30 years. Proper holstering and clothing are important. This shouldn’t be something forced on teachers or administrators, but they should have the option. The point is this. These idiots are much less likely to target areas where they know people are armed.

“I’ve carried a concealed weapon for 30 years” – and what does that prove? You’ve never been shot?

By the way, how effective was the armed officer on duty at Columbine? Since it wasn’t effective, was I’d like you to clarify was this officer not a “good guy?” Or was he not “properly trained?” http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2000/columbine.cd/Pages/DEPUTIES_TEXT.htm

If one of those adults had been armed it would have been a different outcome altogether.

Let’s use a little common sense here. The principal threw herself at the guy. She would have had a much better chance had she been armed. These wackos choose gun-free zones for a reason.

Right. Even more people would have been killed.

No. There’s a REAL good chance that with a properly trained, armed adult present, there would have been much less carnage.

‘properly trained armed adult’…pouring gasoline on a fire usually makes it stop burning

No, but good aim from an armed administrator or teacher would have stopped the killing.

Just pointing out the fallacy in your argument. Now, if no one were armed, we truly could have avoided the tragedy.

What a joke. The worst case of school violence was committed with dynamite. Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer. You’re NEVER going to disarm the bad guys. If you want to be defenseless, fine. Not me. Gun control and gun-free zones don’t work.

I know, its too bad the first victim (the shooter’s mother) didn’t have any guns around the house to protect herself with. Hmmm…

The kid would have killed her with anything he could have gotten his hands on. It ain’t what’s in their hands. It’s what’s in their hearts. They’ll find the means.

Do you honestly think he would have killed that many people with a kitchen knife? Come on, Man, its okay to evolve.

First of all, you are never going to get guns out of the hands of criminals. But, if they are hell bent on committing the crime, they’ll find a weapon.
