Earlier this week, the big news was that the Durham County district attorney had dropped rape charges against the three Duke lacrosse players accused of sexually assaulting an artistic dancer. The cable channels went live with coverage of defense attorneys, Wade Smith and Joe Chesire, once again going over the case with a fine-toothed comb.

Using all the proper anatomical terms, the attorneys went over the mechanics of sex in a shockingly blatant way. Not sure what their purpose was, but they dissected every possible move and said there’s no way their guys did it.

Well, we were blogsurfing and found that Jeff Crum, the chief weather-guesser at News 14 Carolina, had a note on all this. On his quite frank blog, he mentions how deftly Heather Childers handled it all. All you WLOSer fans out there will remember that Heather worked here in Ashvegas for awhile before moving on up.

Here’s Jeff’s take:

Any station carrying that live news conference sure was caught by surprise by the very graphic nature of what was being said. Rightfully so, we broke away and left it to CNN, FOX News and MSNBC to carry the intense and vigorous defense by the attorney, of his clients, to the bigger news outlets. I mean dude, pull it back a bit. My God. You may be that graphic in the court room, but a news conference carried live across the state and nation… zoinks man… Happy Holidays to you too… wow.
Our news anchor, Heather Childers, handled it well by summing up what was being said, apologized for the direct nature by defense council and moved us into regular news programming. Heather is good and she can flat handle live stuff. We have no better anchor in News 14 Carolina than Heather Childers and her live abilities. She is just that good and and I don’t offer that praise easily or lightly.
