Girls on the Run® of Western North Carolina will provide their life-skills and exercise programs at 27 elementary and middle school locations in Western North Carolina this fall.

Last spring the local non-profit served 843 girls in 36 locations. With the program’s continued increase in popularity, it estimates it expects to serve at least 1000 girls in 12 Western North Carolina counties during fall and spring sessions.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program is open to all girls, regardless of income or ability, in 3rd-8th grades. The program encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The Girls on the Run curricula address all aspects of girls’ developments – their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being with such topics as self-esteem, healthy lifestyle habits, setting goals, teamwork, keeping promises and good communication skills. The program also prepares the girls to participate in a 5K community run at the end of the 12  weeks. 

The “Girls on the Run” program for 3rd – 5th grade girls will be offered at ArtSpace Charter, Asheville Catholic, Avery’s Creek Elementary, Bell Elementary, Bruce Drysdale Elementary, Cherokee Elementary, Eastfield Elementary, Estes Elementary, Etowah Elementary, Fletcher Elementary, Glen Arden Elementary, Henderson Elementary, Hendersonville Homeschoolers, Issac Dickson Elementary, Jackson County Parks & Recreation, North Canton Elementary, Oakley Elementary, Old Fort Elementary, Pisgah Elementary, Sand Hill-Venable Elementary, South Macon Elementary, Swain East Elementary, Swain West Elementary, , and Weaverville Elementary.

The “Girls on Track” program for 6th – 8th grade girls will be held at Owen Middle, Rugby Middle and Valley Springs Middle schools.

The fall session will be 12 weeks with lessons twice a week after school and beginning the week of September 21st running through the week of December 14th. Registration will run from September 7th through September 25th. The New Balance Girls on the Run 5K event will be Saturday, December 12th at UNC-Asheville.
