Here’s a little video I recently found gathering dust in a box in my closet. I shot this while I was working for European Stars & Stripes back in the 1990s. It shows me catching a ride on a Vietnam War-era Marine helicopter. Me and my colleague, John, are flying from a military base in Macedonia to a U.S. military base in Kosovo right after the end of the U.S. air war.
Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the NATO bombing of the Republic of Yugoslavia to end ethnic fighting. It’s the closest I’ve ever been to war. I hope never to be so near again.
