Here’s a snippet from the profile of Mike Bettes, formerly of Asheville, in the most recent issue of Runner’s World. Bettes is an avid runner.

What’s your 5-K PR right now?

20:23. I’m close, but I ran that several years ago and just about puked afterward.

Do you have a favorite workout?

I really have gotten into the hills here in Georgia. I grew up in Ohio where it’s pretty flat, so your workouts can be pretty boring at times. Monotonous. Here in Georgia there’s a lot of forest and different terrain, so I challenge myself by doing a good bit of hilly trail runs. I run anywhere from two miles—a fast run—to a max of eight, a pace run.

Do you have any training secrets that you’ve discovered over the years, or something that just really works well for you?

Nutrition is, for my body at least, pretty important. I always have to have something in my stomach right before I work out. I used to get queasy when I ran on an empty stomach. So now I always have fruit or a granola bar and make sure I’m hydrated.

You don't need a weatherman. To know which way the wind blows. 20:23! Not too shabby.

I never thought that Mike Bettes was very good as a tv personality at WLOS. Jason Boyer is much better. Interesting that Bettes did well initially at The Weather Channel when teamed up with Stephanie Abrams. Ms Abrams seems to have totally eclipsed Bettes as she is now one of the main substitutes for Al Roker on NBC's Today show. Bettes doesn't get the national exposure, but he's solid performer on TWC.
