Press release here:

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, Asheville Art Museum will host FANATICON, a convention celebrating comic books and pop culture. As part of the celebration, FANATICON sponsored a contest for artists to design a poster for the event. Thirteen local artists submitted entries. After careful deliberation, a panel of judges selected Brent Brown (Horse Shoe, NC) as the winner.

Brown is a graphic designer and illustrator. His cartoons can be seen regularly in the Mountain Xpress or on his website at brentbrown.com. Brown’s poster, which depicts a large, but smiling, monster crashing his way through various Asheville landmarks, impressed the judges with its sense of energy, comic book style and unmistakable Asheville character.

The panel of judges included Nancy Sokolove (Adult Programs Manager, Asheville Art Museum), Jami Daniels (Daniels Graphics) and Jason Sandford (ashvegas.com). Daniels was pleased with all the entries and appreciated the obvious time and thought on display. She said, “It was not an easy decision. All of the entries were fantastic! You can tell the artists really took the assignment seriously, but had a lot of fun with it, too.”

As the winner, Brown will receive $250, plus an Annual Family Membership to the Asheville Art Museum. Brent’s prizes will be awarded at FANATICON, preceding a special presentation with Marvel Comics artist Butch Guice in the Diana Wortham Theater at 2:00 PM.

All the contest entries will be on display at the convention. Daniels Graphics will be printing the commemorative collector’s edition of the winning poster that will be sold on the day of the event.

FANATICON will take place from 10:00AM – 5:00PM on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Asheville Art Museum. Admission is free. See the schedule of events and learn more about the artists and exhibitors attending at fanaticon.org.
