Press release here:

The 3rd Annual Canstruction® Event will be in downtown Asheville this fall from October 30th to November 6th.

Canstruction® is a design/build competition that occurs in over 145 cities each year and in the fall of 2010, the 3rd annual event is happening in downtown Asheville! Teams of architects, engineers, designers and students mentored by these professionals, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where the competition is held. At the close of the exhibition all of the canned food used in the structures will be donated to MANNA FoodBank.

“We are even more excited for the event this year because it is downtown again and all teams will be in Pack Place. This year, we will again have the “PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD”. This will be given to the team who receives the most votes from the general public the week of October 30- November 6th. One vote equals one can. We are encouraging everyone to take a walk around town and see these student created structures and vote for their favorite! This competition is so important because it not only gives students an opportunity to learn about the design profession, but it also teaches students about the importance of philanthropy,” added Thad Rhoden of Architectural Design Studio and 2010’s competition chairperson.

The Canstruction® Asheville competition will be held on Saturday, October 30th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Pack Place building in the Pack Square Cultural District. Teams include students from Asheville High School and SILSA, Enka High School, Buncombe County Early College, Francine Delany New School, Randolf Learning Center, Evergreen Charter School, Art Space Charter School and Valley Springs Middle School. The public is encouraged to come view the structures throughout the week and “vote” for their favorite. ONE CAN = ONE VOTE and the structures with the most cans will be given the “PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD”. The goal is to raise 20,000 pounds of food.
