When jazz musicians reach a certain point in their development communication, intuition and empathy become the primary focus of their music. Their writing and playing tends to unify for one purpose: telling a story with sound. This is the case with ‘Done For The Evening’. Although the minimal configuration of the group is now considered traditional, they use the ‘piano-less trio format’ to create a multitude of moods; from traditional swinging songs to modern, angular groove-oriented interplay. Most importantly, the compositions are vignettes that get straight to the point and pull the listener into the trio’s conversation.

All three members have been heard separately in almost every setting possible in the Western North Carolina region. To hear them together performing this music is a special treat. The band had its origin coinciding with the early years of the Jazz Composers Forum. They all participated in early composition and combo workshops presented by the Forum. Those were creative times and rich with opportunities for musicians to collaborate and experiment with different combinations of players and sound.

As usual with Forum events, expect the unexpected. Although ‘sax trios’ from the past are an influence, ‘Done For The Evening’ offers a unique twist that is sure to be an unforgettable presentation!
