Columnist Leonard Pitts will be keynote speaker at annual MLK prayer breakfast

Nationally syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the The Martin Luther King Association of Asheville and Buncombe County’s 29th Annual Prayer Breakfast.

Set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 16, in the Grand Ballroom of the Grove Park Inn & Resort, the breakfast celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Pitts, whose column appears in the Citizen-Times, is a syndicated columnist who works at the Miami Herald. In 2004, Pitts was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary.  (See one of his columns on this blog.)

“We’re both honored and proud that a writer of his stature will address our 29th breakfast,” said Oralene Simmons, chair of the association. “Leonard Pitts joins an illustrious company that includes Juan Williams of National Public Radio, Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm of New York, civil rights leader Dr. Bernard Lafayette, and many others.”

Prayer breakfast tickets are available at the following locations: Filo Pastries (1155 Tunnel Road); Green’s Mini-Mart (414 Depot St.); Nature’s Pharmacy (752 Biltmore Ave.); Mountain Java (870 Merrimon Ave.); West End Bakery (757 Haywood Road); and the YMI Cultural Center (39 S.
