Asheville Citizen-Times columnist Susan Reinhardt has gotten remarried, and she told us all about it in a recent column.

Reinhardt is one of the most well-known personalities at the newspaper. An accomplished writer, Susan has been writing a column for the Citizen-Times for something like 25 years, and she’s had them repackaged into two or three books.

With her trademark self-deprecating humor and Southern-fried take on life, Reinhardt has opened up to the world about nearly every aspect of her personal life, from her boob job to child rearing, a bout with mental illness, separation and divorce.

And now, remarriage.

Reinhardt tells us she got married during a recent trip to Jamaica. Reinhardt tells us she married a lawyer from Burnsville by the name of Donnie Laws. In so doing, she starts spilling the details we all came to read:

On her choice of wedding song:

“We can’t get married to Whitney,” I told my beloved, Donny Laws, of Burnsville. “She’s on crack. That wouldn’t be a good start to any marriage. Plus the song is about cheating and sinning.”

Finally, we chose the lesser of cheeses — the theme song from the “Titanic.” I realized too late the Titanic sank. Hmmm.

On wedding day nerves:

The day of elopement was New Year’s Eve at 3:30 p.m. I was terrified, and the groom-to-be looked as if he were a dog en route to the neutering parlor. Would he back out? Would I back out?

More on the cold feet:

I was trying to let him know that while I loved him and thought he was a wonderful man, I wasn’t a sure bet and might possibly turn into a runaway bride.

“Whatever you want to do,” he said, calmly. “I’m happy with things the way they are now.”

Well, of course you are. All men are happy when love doesn’t mean legal entanglement. Right?

And on some fatherly advice:

“Give 80 percent,” my Dad advised. “Even if he gives 20. That’s the secret to a successful marriage.”

Not sure if that’s the best advice ever, but who knows. We’ll be following Reinhardt as she chronicles her new domestic life for us.

These are some of the most mean spirited comments I have ever had the great displeasure to read. What does it say about you that you would so gleefully write things you know will be hurtful to another human being? It says everything I need to know to be quite certain that I hope never to make your acquaintance! It also tells me you are not true Southerners and are quite welcome to leave if you haven’t garnered a modicum of compassion for the people whose lives will be impacted by your words. Here, we have the decency to be polite.

You might try it sometime; it works like this: If you have nothing kind to say to someone who has not been unkind to you, you say nothing at all! Essentially, you are speaking directly to her when you make these comments … though behind your veil of cowardice. Are you really so cruel? I hope she never read these comments, but it’s likely she did … which makes me sad. Thank God, I have the ability to empathize with someone who has been hurt by another.

I – as many, many others – have been uplifted by her writing and respect the work she has done. I look for her byline in the ACT and make certain to read her pieces. Maybe you should try it again. Perhaps you’ll discover a new concept … it’s called humanity.

I agree that she always seems to try too hard to be funny. Most of her stuff is pretty banal and uninteresting. I think she has always tried to copy other writers, especially Erma Bombeck.

I get the impression that she’s trying too hard to be funny or amusing. I’ve found her efforts to be short on both. Her topics have no base of relevance or interest to me. I see that name next to an article and I simply keep on grazing by.

Personally, I find her writing very mediocre — pretty predictable and nothingreally special or accomplished.

But, I haven’t read her stuff in a long while since we no longer read the Asheville Citizen Times.

Susan Reinhardt has got to be one of the worst writers and columnists anywhere. Only in a crappy newspaper like the Citien-Times would such a person find employment.

Accomplished?!??! She makes my skin crawl!
