-There’s an outbreak of the chickenpox at Roberson High School. The school reports that five students have gotten sick since the the school year began, and it is urging students who have not had chickenpox and not been vaccinated to stay home until Oct. 10 to cut the risk of infection. The school adds that if a child has had one vaccine for chickenpox, the CDC strongly encourages a second vaccine within the next five days for extra protection. Buncombe County has the highest rate in the state of parents using a religious exemption to opt out of immunizing children.
–BrewKamp 2016, a music and beer festival set for Nov. 4-6 at Lake Eden in Black Mountain (the same setting as LEAF), will feature craft beers and ciders and music from Girl Talk, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Tribute to Doc Watson, Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers, That 1 Guy, Sim-plified, Apple Seed Collective and more. Tickets are $55 per day, $100 for weekend day pass and $145 for the weekend camping pass with car and RV camping at limited availability.
-Chai Pani restaurant will celebrate its 7th birthday with a $7 all-you-can-eat lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. “We’ll be celebrating with chaat, grilled kebabs, punch, chai, and a whole lot more. Come raise a chai to 7 years!” exclaims a press release.
-The City of Asheville and Land of the Sky Association of REALTORS® announce the 2nd Annual 2016 Asheville Housing Fair, to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 8th at the Stephens Lee Center, 30 George Washington Carver Ave., according to a press release. The event is free and open to the public and will guide consumers and home providers through a myriad of questions surrounding buying, lending, property management, credit repair and more. Representatives from more than a dozen nonprofit organizations and associations will be on site to provide information and one-on-one assistance to those seeking to learn more about affordable housing options.
–Dunkin’ Donuts is celebrating 66 years of serving its famous coffee this National Coffee Day, Thursday, Sept. 29. Stop by and buy any medium hot coffee for only 66 cents at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide, says a press release.
-The Thomas Wolfe 8k is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special beer brewed by Catawba Brewing and a release party set for Sept. 29. The race is Oct. 15. Here’s more:
Wolfeman Kolsch: This traditional German Kolsch is brewed with local hops that had roots in the ground at the time that famed author Thomas Wolfe called Asheville home. With this year being the 40th Anniversary of the Thomas Wolfe 8k – Asheville’s oldest running race – Catawba Brewers felt like these indiginous hops to the region were only fitting in a beer brewed in honor of the Wolfeman himself. The hops were believed to be English in origin but after some dry hopping trials we believe they are more along the lines of a Hallertau or Tettnang. Enjoy this local flavor in a traditionally brewed German Kolsch, and plan on running those extra calories off on October 15th at the Thomas Wolfe 8k.
