Terrie Foster held down the anchor desk on Sunday for WLOSers. This is what she brought us:

Chimney Rock Park’s ‘new era’
Carolyn Ryan went out to Chimney Rock Park and told us that officials there celebrated a “new era” in the park’s history with a picnic and speeches.

Back in May, tthe state bought the park for $24 million, and other conservation groups have bought up another 2,000 acres to add to the park. When it’s all said and done, conservationists and the state believe the park will hold 6,000 acres.

Ryan said people were happy that developers didn’t buy the park, which has been family owned for 100 years. She said park management will remain the same through 2009.

In the necessary crime news…
A 44-year-old man was arrested and charged for breaking into the Waverly Inn bed-and-breakfast in Hendersonville.

It’s fall!
Autumn began Sunday morning, but it still feels like summer.

Rezoning Merrimon
Asheville city leaders will consider rezoning a portion of Merrimon Avenue to allow a developer to build a high-rise development called Horizon. The 10-story buildings will be mixed use. The city’s planning and zoning board will take up the issue Oct. 3.

Ride the bus
Asheville and Buncombe County school officials want you to put your kid on a bus this week. That’s because state officials will use this week’s ridership to determine how much funding the school systems receive for their buses.

In other Sunday news…
There was a heritage craft fair at the N.C. Arboretum to celebrate gardens that show what plants are used to make things like paper, brooms and dyes… And the fall militia encampment was held this weekend at the Vance Birthplace… Finally, famous mime Marcel Marceau died. All the teevee people talked about how his “silence spoke volumes,” etc. They also noted that Michael Jackson stole the moonwalk from Marceau.
