Earlier this week, WLOSers had their little tribute to long-time news director Tom Loebig. They had video of Loebig standing around as WLOSers stood around near their cubicles as Pat “Simple” Simon appeared to hold forth on something stupid like his love of tube socks. There wasn’t any nat sound – just voice over.

As Ashvegas told you weeks ago, Loebig’s leaving to go to work as programming director at AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pa.Loebig attended Penn State University and graduated in 1980 with a degree in journalism and still has family in that area.

Loebig has been at WLOS-TV in Asheville for 11 years, nine of them as the station’s news director. While we really don’t know what a television news director does, if it has anything to do with directing the news, than anything – even a stuffed tube sock like Simon – will be better than Loebig.
