BULLETIN: Excess chlorine released into city of Asheville water system

A Mission Hospitals worker passed along an alert that is making the rounds. I haven’t asked city officials yet what’s going on. Does anybody have more information?

We have received word from the City of Asheville that an excess of chlorine has been inadvertently released into the Asheville water system. We are told there is no health risk with this extra chlorine, however, the water may have a strong odor and taste.

Mission is taking the following precaution:

Bottled water for drinking will be available at both loading docks beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please send a representative from your department to get a supply.

We do not know how long it will take for the chlorine to work its way out of the system.

Update from Mission:

12/16/2008, 5:02 PM UPDATE

The City has been testing the chlorine levels in the water supply all day and the levels are steadily coming down. We can expect to be within normal limits within the hour. We will advise you when you can stop using the bottled water.

I’d noticed a chlorine smell when drinking water from the tap the past day or two, but I chalked it up to having a more sensitive nose due to illness.
