This is significant on the Asheville animal welfare scene. Shelly Moore truly has been a force to boost the Asheville Humane Society’s presence and effectiveness here in Asheville.

Press release:

The board of directors of Asheville Humane Society today announced that President/CEO Shelly A. Moore, Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA), has resigned effective June 18, 2010 to accept the position of Executive Director at Humane Society of Charlotte.

“We are very proud of what Shelly has accomplished for homeless animals here in Buncombe County these past 10 years,” said Asheville Humane Society Board Chair Rick Clark. “She will be missed by Board and staff alike and many animal lovers in our community.”

Moore, who is one of only 52 Certified Animal Welfare Administrators in the United States, brought 14 years of experience to Asheville Humane Society when she started in 2001. During Moore’s tenure as President/CEO of Asheville Humane Society, she restructured the organization and recruited professional animal welfare personnel; successfully launched and completed a $3.5 million capital campaign to construct a new 11,000 sq. ft Adoption & Education Center; participated in the founding of the North Carolina Animal Federation and serves on its Board of Directors, and was instrumental in developing ordinances to strengthen animal protection laws and reduce animal overpopulation.

Moore also worked collaboratively with the Humane Alliance in facilitating Buncombe County’s partnership with the ASPCA® as a Mission Orange community. Mission Orange is an initiative by the ASPCA to increase the number of animals’ lives saved through targeted program efforts. Buncombe County is one of only 10 such model communities in the United Sates selected by the ASPCA.  Moore currently serves on the National Companion Animal Advisory Council, a 13 person appointed committee of animal welfare professionals.

Katherine A. McGowan, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and Asheville Humane Society Vice President, has been named chief executive officer on an interim basis and will transition the organization into the new animal care campus.
