The Blue Moon Bakery has closed in Asheville. The local newspaper has the story here.

I remember when the Blue Moon first opened (1992). It was incredible. The Ashvegas renaissance was just beginning. Downtown Asheville was not the thriving place it is now, but the aroma of fresh baked bread as you walked into the Blue Moon oasis was astounding. And what a great idea – bread, pastries and coffee, all right there? It was a novel idea.

Today, the landscape has changed completely. There’s a Starbucks or Bean Streets or Gold Hill Espresso on every corner. And everybody is making their own bread now, from Greenlife to Earthfare to Sisters McMullen. As someone says in the newspaper story, the downtown market is flooded.

So, Blue Moon’s time and place have passed.

It’s too bad that Blue Moon Bakery is closing, but I’m growing weary of every business that goes under blaming “chains.” No one quoted in the newspaper story blamed Beanstreets, which is a block away. Instead, one employee singled out “chains,” i.e. Starbucks, even though there’s not a Starbucks within 3 miles of Blue Moon Bakery. It’s doubtful at best that Blue Moon lost any customers who said, “Let’s not sit on the sidewalk at Blue Moon and count body piercings. Let’s just enjoy the ambience of the Starbucks drive-thru in the Harris Teeter parking lot.” The truth is, if you have a product the public wants, they’ll support it. If not, well, the Citizen-Times will write your obituary.
