Mike Bettes.

Bettes was a decent weather guy for WLOS a couple of years ago. He wore excellently tailored suits. He didn’t over-hype the weather. He bored us with his bike-riding.

But Bettes seemed like a decent guy. Until he got wrapped up with his fake Australian girlfriend. She was a KISS Country radio personality, and I can’t for the life of me remember her name. Can someone help?

Anyway, she had this odd Aussie accent and they played it up on the radio. At least until Citizen-Times columnist John Boyle did a little digging into her past and found out that she “picked up” the accent during a college visit to Australia.

After that revelation, it seems she couldn’t stop. She came clean on the radio, then did another interview with columnist Susan Reinhardt, in which she told of being sexually molested as a child, in hopes that telling her story could help others.

Turns out Bettes is still on the air, over at the Weather Channel, still doing solid reports. He beats the hell out of Cuervo, who we’re stuck with now.

I couldn’t remember where I had seen the smile on Bettes’ face before, then it hit me:

He’s Mas Headroom, 80s icon from those Coke commercials.

    Separated at birth?

    You decide.

    KABOOM! rumble, rumble, rumble ….

Maybe john697 doesn’t think Bettes is the best of the News 13 weather readers (although I do), but Cuevas better than him? Come on. Even Jennifer Hill was better than the Count.

Although I agree with most of what you write, I can’t agree with your assessment that Bettes was better than Cuevas. I will never forget Bettes in March 2001 coming on the air saying that “winter was over” and then 4 days later us digging out of several inches of snow, and then the WLOS anchors bragging about how Bettes “nailed the snowstorm”. Cuevas just seems more passionate about the weather than Bettes, who always seemed to care more about where to ride his bike than what was the weather going to be tomorrow.

The KISS Country radio personality that Bettes was involved with was Carrie Hunter, of the “Chuck and Carrie” morning show team.

I saw a poll a couple of days ago about who is your favorite weather person. What were the results and what happened to it?
