From the Raleigh News & Observer:

The direct-selling industry, where consultants hold home parties to sell jewelry, makeup, sex toys and other products, is getting a new player: The Biltmore Co.

The Asheville tourist destination announced Tuesday that it plans to start Biltmore Inspirations next year to sell more products with the Biltmore brand, including food and kitchen gadgets.

Biltmore Inspirations will introduce its product line in early 2011 and recruit a national team of consultants to start holding parties by April. The products will only be available through consultants, not at the Biltmore estate.

you people are crazy. Do you have any idea how much money it takes to run an estate like the Biltmore. Also those who work in any business in asheville owes Biltmore for bringing in over a million visitors a year to asheville. heaven knows there is no jobs in this town except service industries. The direct sales company will be quality like the Biltmore name.
As for charitable contributions why don't you do a little research before you make allegations. The Biltmore company and Cecil Family give more money to Charity than anyone in Asheville.

The Biltmore Company and the Cecil family don't have the charitable presence in the community that, say, Eblen and Kimmel do. Does anyone know what their corporate and family charitable efforts are?

Pretty funny or sad. It's obvious that the heirs have turned to sweatshop tactics to attempt a profit in slave trade tourism business. It's amazing how self touted this company is for stating themselves as "Best Employers". Their rate of pay and useless optimism is a bad joke. But I guess if you're a Marketing VP, being stuck on the outside, looking in – you better try to do something that will make "Massa" some coin.

We were reluctant visitors to Biltmore Estate this summer and went with some out of town guests who had heard of it and wanted to see the house and gardens. What a total ripoff. The house is nothing compared to what is everyday when you go to Europe, and the gardens were nothing special too. I couldn't get over how expensive a day trip to Biltmore can be. The food and concessions are just plain ordinary and highly over-priced.

Most locals have been there one time — and once is enough. It's just not that impressive a tourist attraction. I don't think this idea of "branding" an over-priced tourist trap is very smart of Biltmore.

And about the wine. Very mediocre at best.

@LOLzzz, kinda hard to do all that wonderful stuff if you're not making an "almighty profit."

Most people in this town have no clue about the positive impact of Biltmore.

Yep, more overpriced junk made in china with a fancy name attached. Just what we truly don't need. If they had a brain they'd attach that legendary name to epically large monetary donations to local charities, building parks and contributing to the local community in a positive way. But no, all they care about is the almighty profit.

Biltmore's wines are mostly garbage. Stuff for tourists. Not top quality wine.

Every single company has its hits and misses, including Biltmore. You ain't succeeding if you ain't trying. But they've been in Belk for several years now and pretty successful there, and in wine for many years.

If it's handcrafted in the place called Biltmore by artisans, I guess there might be a value to these products. But if they're made elsewhere such as (gasp!) China(!?) the marketing guru who came up with this idea should be banished to a lifetime of factory work in that location.

It seems like a cheapening of their brand

I'm sure George Vanderbilt is turrning over in his grave at the prospect of his legacy being ruined by commercial BS like this scheme. Pitiful is the word for this! Whomever came up with this should be run out of town asap.

The Biltmore Company has miserable track record and some major failures in attempting to "brand" their name, through merchandise, furniture, etc. at various retailers. I think they tried with with Lowes, Belk stoes and others. I don't expect this attempt to be anything different. Sounds like Tupperware, Avon or Mary Kay cosmetics with "parties" this time around. Business at the Estate must be hurting too.

Classy move. A long line of antecedents here– snake oil medicine men, fuller brush, Amway, Mary Kay, etc. Brings a real tony ring to the Biltmore name.
