Bulldog has been keeping his ear tuned to local Ashvegas radio. Here’s what he’s got:

Big Wise Radio (1310 AM) has introduced a local sports talk show into its all-day lineup of national sports talk programming. “The Wise Guys” feature longtime radio reporter Bill McClement and recent arrival Pat Ryan, the latter more noted for his ill-fated morning show with some aging guy – quickly fired – who confused Western North Carolina with Montana by referring to the region as “the land of the big sky.”

McClement knows his local sports, but Ryan is clueless. He proves his point weekly in trying to interview former NASCAR Sportsman national champion Jack Ingram of Asheville on stock car racing topics. Then he closes with this: “Jack’s one of our favs.” Favs? Favs? Liberace might be one of your “favs,” but try calling someone a “fav” around the track garage and see what looks you get._

The WISE Guys may not be perfect, but at least they’re trying to put some of the “local” back in local broadcasting — something that’s gotten lost as the Clear Channels and Sinclairs of the world have been given free rein to snatch up every station in a market.(Yes, I know Saga isn’t exactly a local company; but they’re making an effort to let their station be a local one). As for Pat, he’s been around for awhile. Wasn’t he part of the old WSKY in the waning days of the Lee family dynasty? And I’ve heard Suzanne Hudson (Pat’s former morning show partner) called many things, but “some aging guy” isn’t one of them.

If you don’t like the topics Bill and Pat are discussing, or you don’t like the interchange between Pat and Jack Ingram, why not call in and show off your Schwab-ish sports knowledge?
