Press release here from loyal reader Sue:

On Monday, November 7, from 11am to 3pm, the stylists at Beauty Parade salon will be cutting hair for a cause: 100% of the proceeds will go directly to ALIVE, a local charity that purchases art supplies and distributes them to area school children.

In an atmosphere of art groups and arts education budgets facing deep cuts, Asheville artist and former teacher Jarrett Rutland assigned himself a formidable homework project: Develop a template for raising funds to purchase art supplies for students that have little exposure or access to them. Mr. Rutland is passionate about the importance of art in early education, and his can-do approach to counterbalancing the cuts has been to meet with local business owners to engage them as partners in raising funds and distributing supplies. It’s a work in progress, but so far, the organization he founded, ALIVE, has distributed over $1,400 in art supplies, with over 850 students having been involved in ALIVE programs or recipients of ALIVE gifts.

The stylists at Beauty Parade salon in West Asheville collectively wanted to begin a regular program of participating in projects to give back to the community. While looking into some different options, salon owner Terra Marshall suggested Jarrett’s ALIVE program. When asked how she found out about him, the answer was simple “He walked in the front door.”

All cuts—for women, men, or children— will be $30, and again, 100% of that will go directly to ALIVE. Appointments should be scheduled in advance at 828.257.4073. Let’s hope they have the salon supplies to keep up with the demand.
