Ashvegas weekend: looking for love in all the wrong places

Ashvegas has had a bit of frustrating weekend. We went all over town, expecting to be wowed, and just about every place came up short of our standards for fun.

First up was the “Dancing with the Stars” event over at the W.C. Reid Center in town. The event was a great fund-raiser for the recreational center. The place was packed, the event raised a lot of money and people were having fun. A sucess by any measure.

But Ashvegas came to see some dancing. We wanted spins and turns and real booty shaking. Instead, we got “Shuffling with the Stars.” We know everybody rated as amatuers. But c’mon. There was waltzing and swing dancing. Bor-ring. We’ve seen more strenous displays of athleticism at Givens Estates. Jeez. Put some power into, people. Very disappointing.

Next, we went all the way out to Swannanowhere for the Blue Ridge Roller Girls meet-up. What we found was a hoard of pimply faced teeny boppers spending their babysitting money. Over in the corner were two or three roller girls trying not to get run over by the hoard. There was no way we were paying $8 to stand in a sea of hormones to catch a glimpse of a roller girl. Again, very disappointing.

We had the most fun, by far, at the AKC dog agility trials out at the WNC Ag Center. The event was free and it was action-packed, as the four-legged furballs leapt and dashed through the courses.

It was interesting – 95 percent of the trainers were women. What’s up with that? A maternal drive to train? There was more pampering, scolding and baby talk going on than we’ve ever seen in a pre-school. Guess the women (all ages, by the way) enjoy the companionship and the social activity. So much for dogs being “man’s” best friend.

Anyway, thanks to the doggies and their owners for saving our weekend.

I’m sorry for all the disappointments this weekend. BRRG was really excited to find you waiting to see us Saturday night in Swannanowhere! The ridiculous crowd at the rink that night was a disappointing and frustrating surprise for us as well. But we had well over 10 rollergirls out on the rink and we did generate a lot of interest…new skaters signed up, refs, volunteers, etc., etc. Please feel free to come out to one of our private practices or upcoming events where will be center stage! Get in touch for more info if you’d like. Thanks for the luv and support!

You should’ve come out to Hairspray for Effie’s Club Follies. There were sparkly pasties everywhere! You would’ve lurved it.

Did you even once consider visiting a house of worship? Nothing like a glimpse of the Rapture to spice up a slow weekend. I wish I could go to church, but as soon as I set foot in the door the water in the baptismal founts starts to boil.
