Some of what’s going around this week:
-Adrian Vassallo, a long-time proponent of downtown Asheville, announced that he’s running for Asheville City Council over the weekend. Friends and supporters gathered at a luncheon set up in Chicken Alley, where Vassallo, a Certified Public Account with Dixon Hughes Goodman, made his announcement. For about the past decade, Vassallo has worked to make downtown clean, safe, livable and fun through his efforts serving on both the Asheville Downtown Commission, an advisory board to City Council, and the Asheville Downtown Association, a nonprofit focused on boosting downtown. Three City Council seats held by Gordon Smith, Cecil Bothwell and Gwen Wisler are up for election, as is the mayor’s seat, held by Esther Manheimer. All the incumbents but Smith are seeking re-election.
-Jeremy Goldstein, who has announced he’s running for City Council, recently held his campaign kickoff event at the Boat House at Smoky Park Supper Club. Word is that is was a well-attended event. Lou Bissette, a beloved former Asheville mayor, gave a speech in support of Goldstein’s candidacy.
-In case you missed it, here’s the list of announced candidates for Asheville City Council Election ’17, in addition to Vassallo and Goldstein: Rich Lee, Kim Roney, Cecil Bothwell, Gwen Wisler, Dee Williams, Sheneika Smith and Vijay Kapoor. Manheimer has announced she’s running for re-election for mayor, and Jonathan Wainscott has announced he’ll be running for mayor, as well. The candidates will start making their runs official on July 7 at the Buncombe County Board of Elections. A primary election will be held Oct. 10, and the general election will be held in November.
-Word on the street: Rondell Lance will run for Buncombe County Sheriff. Lance is a former police officer and president of the Fraternal Order of Police Asheville, Lodge 1. Last month, Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan announced that he would not seek election to a fourth term. Duncan, who was elected in 2006, helped restore professionalism to a department rocked by the scandal of former Sheriff Bobby Medford’s tenure.
-The Asheville Mall is planning some major renovations to interior common areas and three entrances. Stay tuned for more details.
-The Biltmore Estate today announced its summer concert series lineup for 2017. Here it is:
July 27 – Kool & the Gang and The Commodores
July 30 – The Beach Boys
August 18 – Newsboys with special guest Mandisa
August 19 – Tony Bennett
August 24 – REO Speedwagon
August 26 – Goo Goo Dolls: Long Way Home Tour with Phillip Phillips.
Important to note that Lance is registered UNA and has voted in Republican primaries. I assume he is running for the republican nomination for the seat?
