Here’s more of what’s going around, including plans for a poutine restaurant in North Asheville:

-BadHappy Poutine Shop is planning to move into the former Firehouse Subs at 354 Merrimon Avenue (that’s in the little shopping center that’s just up the hill, and across the street, from Homegrown restaurant). What is poutine? I had to look it up: French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. A big thank you to loyal reader Scott for the heads-up!

-Work has started on the new bar going into the former Kim’s Wig Shop on Haywood Street. (RIP Kim’s). The new bar is called Asheville Club 1901 and harkens back to the drinking history of the Miles Building, as Thomas Caulder of the Mountain Xpress wrote last year.

The Barrel House pub and restaurant is coming to 1459 Merrimon Ave. That’s the former location of The Potato Wedge restaurant.

-Asheville city officials announced on Tuesday that City Manager Gary Jackson is planning to retire at the end of the year after 13 years. Jackson has managed the day-to-day operations of city government through scandal, recession and boom times.

-Zoe Rhine, who oversees the North Carolina Room in Pack Memorial Library, offers a challenging essay: “How Black and White is Asheville?”

The Salvage Station down on Riverside Drive is putting together an amazing music line-up for later this spring. Insane Clown Posse is scheduled for March 11, and the venue just announced that Lupe Fiasco is scheduled for March 31.

-In case you missed it: Airbnb announced recently that short-term rental hosts in Asheville earned $19.8 million in 2017, more money than any other city in the state, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported. Some 160,000 travelers were hosted at Airbnb spots. That announcement comes as city officials continue to make moves to curtail Airbnb rentals around town.
