-Atkins joins Asheville City Council race: Asheville City Council elections are later this year. Here’s the announcement:corey_atkins_asheville_city_council_2015

Corey B. Atkins, a defense attorney at Barnett & Atkins, formally announced this week his candidacy for Asheville City Council.
A South Asheville resident, Atkins, 32, stated “I want Asheville to continue the steady growth we have seen without losing our unique identity. I want all of our service departments to stay invested in the city they serve and protect. Most importantly, I want to make sure everyone who lives or visits our great city feels welcomed.”
Atkins grew up in Mount Airy, North Carolina and has lived in Asheville with his wife, an Asheville native, and daughter since 2010. He is an alumnus of American University and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. Atkins serves as board member for the Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund, which provides shoes to needy kids in Western NC.
Atkins looks forward to connecting with supporters at events and via social media. The campaign kickoff event is scheduled for April 30th at Twisted Laurel on College Street. All are welcome.

-i play benefits: Pretty cool. From a press release:

When i play., Inc owners, Emi Kubota and Becky Canon announced last month they would pay for 25% of the cost of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm shares, a quarter of their Asheville-based staff signed up. Starting in May, 13 boxes of fresh, local vegetables from Ivy Creek Family Farm for the 2015 growing season will be delivered each week to i play., headquartered at the Riverside Business Park.

Ivy Creek has been looking for a business as a partner for a workplace CSA initiative. “We’ve offered free delivery of 8 shares or more to businesses for years, but until i play. offered their employees an incentive, we haven’t had enough participants from a business. We’ve had great participation from community centers, like the JCC and churches and temples, but not a for-profit business. We’re thrilled.” said farm owner Anna Littman. Around the nation, more companies are coordinating with local farms for workplace CSA deliveries, but i play. is among the first to include financial contribution as an employee benefit.

Wisconsin-based Group Health Cooperative and WPS Health Insurance, both offer $100 and $200 reimbursements for subscribers participating in farm CSAs. Blue Cross Blue Shield, North Carolina’s biggest health insurance provider, does not yet offer reimbursement for CSAs, but that could change if enough subscribers demand that benefit. When employers and insurance companies help to foot the bill for CSA shares, workers and their families can enjoy eating their veggies.

-Sausage party at MG Road: Here you go, from press release:dan_silo_asheville_2015

Last month saw the pop-up fires stoked once again at MG Road with the return of Girls on Deck. Not to be outdone, it’s now time for the boys to step up. Enter, Sausage Party. Dan Silo, the man behind the meat would be too humble to call himself such a thing, but he is undoubtably the resident meat master of the current Thunderbird crew at MG Road. Recognizing his skills back in November, Elliott Moss called upon Dan to join him at The Thunderbird, and subsequently Dan will be continuing on with Elliott to Buxton Hall Barbecue when it opens this summer.

Like many cooks, Dan has had a serpentine journey through the culinary world, stopping for stints and stages at many esteemed restaurants along the way including Animal & Son of A Gun in LA, McCrady’s in Charleston, Empire State South in Atlanta, and Mado in Baltimore. It was at Mado where Dan said he had a seminal moment in his culinary career. He was afforded the opportunity by a very generous chef named Rob Levitt to break down a whole pig all on his own, and as Dan puts it, turning that pig into a beautiful porchetta was nothing short of “life changing”. For Dan, working with a whole animal puts everything in perspective as far as the responsibility we have to this being that gave it’s life so we can eat. It says it fills him with a primal feeling of wanting to not waste a single piece of it, and make sure it’s turned into something beautiful. Beautifully delicious at least.

As a bonus, we are also pleased to be working with Catawba Brewing Company on this event. Just yesterday Dan had a tasting with Catawba to pair up some of their fine brews with his hand-made sausages. For the night of the event Catawba will be in the house and we’ll have suggested beer pairings for each dish. And of course, MG Road will be cooking up some fine cocktails to pair with sausages as well.

As of now Sausage Party is scheduled for Thursdays: April 16th and May 21st, wedged neatly between Girls on Deck events so you can get your sausage fix. And who knows, if there is sausage demand, we may just keep going. Stay tuned.

What: Dan Silo celebrates the sausage with an a menu of all his own hand-made sausage plates each with a suggested pairing from Catawba Brewing Company. And of course he couldn’t leave out his beloved Chicago Dog (made by his own hand) and the always delectable canned vienna sausage.

Where: MG Road, 19 Wall Street, downtown Asheville

When: Thursdays. April 16th & May 21st.
Food from 5:30pm – 10:30pm, drinks for as long as you need em.

Tailgate markets opened and opening: It is officially tailgate market season in and around Asheville. Here’s the press release from ASAP:

Spring is here and the growing season is upon us! Tailgate tents are going up, and area farmers markets are opening outdoors for the season. Celebrate spring by getting a taste of what is growing in your community.
