-Katie Button a JBF finalist: Chef Katie Button of Asheville’s Curate has been named a semi-finalist for the prestigious Rising Star Chef of the Year award handed out by the James Beard foundation. Eater.com has full list of all award nominees here. Congrats!
-Buffalo Nickel soft opening: Buffalo Nickel, one of a wave of new restaurants that are opening this month along Haywood Road in West Asheville, held its soft opening on Tuesday night. The house was packed. I sampled a great short rib, skate wing and more. Look for the restaurant to be open to the public next week.
-Downtown Market update: Here’s the update on construction that’s coming next for the Downtown Market, following the building’s sale.
The Downtown Market will be moving into the north end of the building some three months from now or when that part of the renovation has been completed. This will be a clean, well-lit space with our own entrance on the new deck that will be built at the north end of the building. This will be an exciting time to move into a gleaming new space, just in time for the most productive season of 2014.
-Food Blog Forum coming to town: About 100 food bloggers will be in Asheville in August. Here’s the announcement:
SAVE THE DATE! It’s official, Food Blog Forum 2014 will take place August 17-19th in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina!

-Literacy council spelling bee returns: From the press release:
The 23rd annual Spelling Bee benefitting The Literacy Council of Buncombe County will be held April 24, 2014 at “On Broadway” in downtown Asheville. Fifteen teams of three adults each will compete in the most spirited and outrageous word challenge of their lives. This isn’t your average spelling bee. Teams must have both spelling and concentration skills in order to disregard the pandemonium caused by a costumed, cheering audience!

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens during and after the Food Blog Forum in August. I’m such a big fan of the food scene here in Asheville, so I’m sure these bloggers are going to be enjoying their time in the city.
Oh for the love of God. Another progressive telling us what to eat, or not eat. Here’s a better way for the Mayor to spend her time. He bout fix the roads Friday? Work on the water Wednesday’s? Transport the transients Tuesday? So friggin ridiculous.
Thursday, March 20th is “Meatout” day in AVL. Get your meat out! Me? I’m having a double BLT for lunch with a side of bacon!
