Grail Moviehouse, the new downtown Asheville movie theater on South French Broad Avenue, is eyeing a Memorial Day Weekend grand opening. The theater is still working out details on which movies it will screen, so stay tuned for details.

-The annual Montford Music and Arts Festival is set for Saturday.

Riverside Studios is holding an art opening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday for a new show called “Inspirations: The Artist’s View.” More:

Stop by and see new works by the studios nine artists: Carol Armstrong, David Berry, Deanna Chilian, Patricia Cotterill, Nat Dickinson, Rosa Jung, Julie Miles, Brit Oie, and Lucretia Speas. We
are also open all weekend for the River Arts District Studio stroll if you can’t make the Friday party.

The Village Potters, located in Asheville’s River Arts District, is proud to announce the first annual exhibit and sale to feature their Studio Assistant/Apprentices, according to a press release. Here’s more:

The show, titled “Apprentices: The Next Generation” features the developing work of Apprentices Sarah Thurmond, Jenay Martin, Hannah McGehee, and Tori DiPietro. The show will run from Monday, May 16th through Saturday, July 16th, with an opening reception on Friday, May 20, 2016 from 4:00 – 7:00PM.

The four emerging artists currently work as apprentices under the well-established master potters at The Village Potters, and come from diverse backgrounds and methods of working with clay. … The Village Potters are Sarah Wells Rolland, Judi Harwood, Melanie Robertson, Lori Theriault, Karen Dubois, and Dearing Davis. They comprise an intentional Collective of potters who share a commitment to nurturing each other’s success. They have a fully equipped Pottery housing each of their working professional studios, and The Village Potters includes three showrooms exhibiting and selling their fine, contemporary ceramic art.

The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design’s Craft Research Fund grant program advances and expands research about craft in the United States. Since 2005, the program has supported innovative research on critical issues in craft theory and history, explored the inter-relationship among craft, art, design and contemporary culture, and fostered new cross-disciplinary approaches to scholarship in the craft field.Proposals are welcome from curators, researchers, independent scholars and graduate students.

-The SuperHappy Trivia Challenge will be held Wednesday (May 18) at 7:30 p.m. at 35below, the theater below the Asheville Community Theatre MainStage. Here’s more:

Inspired by such shows as The Match Game, Who’s Line is it Anyway? And Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me…, SupperHappy is a live, unscripted (mostly) comedy show. Adam Jack Arthur, host and font of useless internet knowledge, pose questions ranging from “Wow! I didn’t know that.” To “Wow. Nobody should know that!” to a panel of pseudo-celebrity guinea pi… we mean, guests. Throw in the occasional studio audience member and a glass of wine, and you have an evening of entertainment unlike anything you’re gonna see in Asheville. Other participants include Troy Burnette, Barbie Angell, Rodney Smith, Jillian Summers, Jeff Catanese and Anthony Willingham. General admission is $12.

The Asheville Art Museum will host its annual benefit at 6 p.m. on June 18 at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel. Here’s more:

The cost is $150 per person. The event will include a cocktail dinner, gourmet food stations and a live auction featuring one-of-a-kind vacation packages. The raffle is limited to only 100 raffle tickets at $100 each. (Approximate value of the Dream Bar is $2,000.) Tickets for the raffle may be purchased early by contacting Joanna Miller at [email protected] or 828.253.3227, ext. 117. The winning ticket will be drawn the evening of the Gala, and the winner need not be present to win.
