More of what’s going around:

-The Funkatorium, Wicked Weed’s sour beer tasting room on the South Slope, is expanding. There are plans to add a new covered roof over existing patio space, as well as adding new seating; a bocci ball court will also be installed, according to building permits.

-MADabolic Gym is planning to turn a 4,165-square-foot shell of a space into a gym at 150 Coxe Ave. That’s the new apartment/retail building at the corner of Coxe and Banks avenues.

-Ginger’s Revenge will celebrate its grand opening starting 2 p.m. on May 13. If you haven’t been yet, definitely check it out. These guys make a delicious ginger beer in a sweet spot, 829 Riverside Dr.

-Asheville-based documentary filmmaker Scott Kirschenbaum is preparing to release a documentary film called Of Woman Born, which follows a woman going through labor.

Xpand Fest, a new arts festival on Asheville’s South Slope, is set for June 10. The event plans to have more than 30 performing groups, an engaging nonprofit arts arcade, a special festival brew and more than 35 local art and food vendors.

The Laughing Heart Literary Project and Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café are presenting the first Laughing Heart Literary Festival, August 1-4, in Hot Springs, according to a press release. More:

The event will bring together nationally- and regionally-celebrated authors in onstage conversations about their books and books that have changed their lives. The festival will feature an opening night panel of authors honoring the writing life of Robert Morgan. Participating in the author conversations will be acclaimed authors Ron Rash, Jill McCorkle, Terry Roberts, Julia Franks, Wayne Caldwell, Keith Flynn, Susi Gott Seguret, Trent Thompson, and Amy Greene.

A highlight of the festival will be two literary-”Craft Conversations” in which authors will address how a book takes shape from writer to reader. These will include discussions on the mechanics of developing a story, the process for delivering a completed manuscript to an editor, and the next steps on the road to publication. A panel with representatives from Malaprop’s Bookstore and Algonquin Books will bring bookseller/publisher perspectives to the discussion.
