More of what’s going around:

-Brother Wolf Animal Rescue is seeking donations after it said in a Facebook post today that somebody broke into the organization’s food shed and stole about 2,000 pounds of cat and dog food.

-Mars Hill University has been awarded a federal grant of up to $2 million over the next four years to help train Western North Carolina nurses, according to a press release. The Nursing Workforce Diversity grant will provide $500,000 for Mars Hill in the fiscal year that begins July 1, and is expected to be renewed for three more years. More:

The goal of the Nursing Workforce Diversity program, administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to increase access to nursing education for students from backgrounds that are underrepresented among the current nursing workforce. For Mars Hill, that dovetails perfectly with the very reason the university began its nursing programs. The university established the Judge-McRae School of Nursing to serve the local Western North Carolina region and disadvantaged regions throughout North Carolina. The grant gives Mars Hill an opportunity to increase the number of nursing graduates who are diverse, representative of their communities, and skilled in serving disadvantaged communities with cultural sensitivity and compassionate care.

-McCormick Field will be home to the “Asheville Hippies” for one night only this Thursday. The team will wear custom, tie-dyed jerseys with the word “Hippies” across the chest as they take on the Greenville Drive. The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefitting the Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund, which provides shoes for children in need. Bids on the game worn Hippie Jerseys can be placed at www.AshevilleHippies.com.

The “Asheville Hippies” started out as a Twitter troll attack after the Greenville team referred to the Tourists by that name. What resulted was a friendly challenge offered by Asheville and accepted by Greenville: whichever team won the majority head-to-head contests in 2016 would have to wear a specialty jersey the following year, either “Hippies” for Asheville, or “Rednecks” for Greenville. Last year’s series ended in a 12-12 tie. The Tourists decided to go ahead with upholding their end of the agreement, while Greenville declined.

“If poking a little fun at ourselves will help raise money for those in need, then I’m all for it,” said Asheville Tourists President Brian DeWine.

In addition to the custom Hippie Jerseys, the Tourists will also wear custom New Era Hippie caps. A limited number of T-shirts and caps are on sale now at the Tourist shop at McCormick Field.

-Aloft Asheville Downtown will host a Highland Brewing Tap Take-Over on Thursday, according to a press release. The event includes a free beer tasting from 4:30-6 pm on Thursday at WXYZ with the following Highland beers: Gaelic Ale, Daycation IPA, Pilsner and the Big Briar Tart Raspberry Ale. A representative from Highland Brewing will be onsite to answer any questions, and the takeover will continue with Highland beers on tap throughout the holiday weekend while supplies last, according to the release.
