Some of what’s going around after the long Labor Day Weekend; hope y’all had a great one!

Asheville FM is hiring a station manager.

My Morning Jacket will be playing the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville on Oct. 27. Brought in by AC Entertainment. “My Morning Jacket Fan Club tickets will go on sale tomorrow with general ticket sales to follow. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for constant updates on all your music news.”

Hi-Wire Brewing is holding its Oktoberfest party at its Big Top location near Biltmore Village on Sept. 10, and Foothills Meats will be holding a hot dog-eating contest. Ten contestants will compete to win up to $200. Sign up here.

Artimus Pyle, the former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer who, last I knew, was still living in Asheville, is co-writing and producing a biopic about his life with the iconic Southern rock band, reports Rolling Stone. “The film, tentatively titled Free Bird, also focuses on one of the music’s most tragic moments: The 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of six people, including his friend and Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant.”

-The North Carolina Natural Products Association presents Pickle Pickin’ – A Preservation Celebration from 2-6 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Asheville Food Park on Amboy Road, according to a press release. More:

The free event will highlight speaker, author and fermentation specialist Sandor Katz, along with other pickle and preservation experts from the region demonstrating and teaching about preserved food traditions. The event will also include a silent auction and a pickle and preserve competition open to the public for tasting.

In addition to Sandor, classes and demonstrations will be held on quick canning pickles, making kimchi and other surprising vegetable ferments, ferments for mental health, how to make Gravid Lachs (preserved fish), herbal vinegars, kombucha brewing, and even probiotic facials.

NCNPA is highlighting how area folks make the most of the end of season farm, garden, or local farmer’s market offerings by showing off a favorite recipe to inspire others and impress friends! The general public is welcome to enter the pickle and preserve competition. Categories include dills, sweets, relish, ferments, jams/jellies, vinegars, and sauce/sauces. Registration is required for competition entries. The competition is open to the general public, as well as area manufacturers. A special category is open to those who have USDA certification to produce preserved dairy or meat products.

Pickle Pickin’ is free to the public with tasting tickets available for $5 via the registration link or on site.

-Here’s part of a note I received recently about a casting call for a home renovation show:

My name is Desiree and I work for Leftfield Entertainment. We’re a full-scale television production company that creates a number of programs for various cable networks, such as The History Channel, Discovery, A&E and FYI – including the new “Tiny House Nation” and international smash hit, “Pawn Stars.”

We are currently working with a major cable network on a NEW home transformation series about families across the nation who are about to move back into the homes they grew up in. Each episode will follow outgoing families moving back into their childhood homes and then renovating them to their liking. At the same time, we’ll follow their parents as they move out of their old home and hunt for a new perfect home to start the next chapter of their lives in, whether that’s downsizing, moving into a 55 and over community, or whatever that looks like for them. We are looking for families that have stories similar to this and would be interested in having their renovation done on our show! Email [email protected].

-On Sept. 16 at the Sol Bar at New Mountain AVL, there’s a music show to support the folks protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. From The Undergrowth. More:

A Night of Multi-Genre acoustic & electronic music to raise awareness and funds to support the brave protestors fighting against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. All donations received at this event will go directly to the people on the front lines of the #DAPL Protests.
