Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want.Quite an interesting November First. Here’s some of what’s going around:

-Snowpocalypse: A winter storm brought half a foot to a foot of snow to North Carolina counties bordering Tennessee. Asheville got a few inches, most of which had melted off by midday. Still, the Halloween night snow had people alternately freaking out and celebrating.

Weather forecaster Jeff Cox tweets @WxManJeffCox that the official snowfall total for Asheville, as measured at the city’s official climate station near the airport, recorded more than 4 inches of snow. This is only the third Asheville snow on record for Nov. 1, with the other two in 1954 and 1993.

Some weather sharps are saying there’s a chance we might get another shot of pre-Thanksgiving snow. Sigh. Could be a long winter.

-New West Asheville blog: There’s a great new blog about West Asheville by my friend Kathleen, who has watched it go from “Worst Asheville” to its current greatness over the past 15 years. Check out westashevillelife.com.

-Pinups for Pitbulls: The Asheville-based nonprofit recently announced that it is opening a boutique in Asheville called @darlingsasheville. “We will have all of our @pinupsforpitbullsinc and @upthepups gear there and will be developing new lines for children and babies! We will also have Pin-up clothing, men’s clothing, art, and so much more!” The location is listed as 69-A Biltmore Ave., but I’m not sure exactly where along Biltmore that is.

-Shut-In Trail Run: Shut-In was this morning. Running nearly 18 miles up a mountain in this weather must have really, really sucked. Congratulations to all attempts and finishes.

-Roundhouse demolition: Norfolk Southern was scheduled to begin demolition of the old roundhouse down in the River Arts District today. I drove by this morning and didn’t see any action.

-Frugal Backpacker set to open: Frugal Backpacker is relocating the Westgate Shopping Center and opens Friday, Nov. 7. A grand opening event will be held Nov. 14. “Frugal Backpacker offers a diverse selection of clothes for the Asheville lifestyle, as well as specialty gear for hiking and camping,” says the press release.

-New public art unveiling: The city of Asheville will hold a ceremony at noon on Nov. 8 to unveil the city’s newest public art piece, the mural “Daydreamer” by artists Alex Irvine and Ian Wilkinson on the side of the Aloft Hotel in downtown Asheville.

-Angel Olsen track: Angel Olsen, who lives in Asheville now, has just released a bonus track for the album she released earlier this year called Burn Your Fire for No Witness. The track is called May As Well. NPR loves it.

-Krull & Company adds partner: Asheville’s socially and environmentally responsible investment management firm recently announced that Neill Yelverton, a financial advisor at the firm, has become an equity partner.

-Malaprop’s book events: Three very cool events to take note if you love Malaprop’s and you love books:

First, there’s this:

Once in awhile a book will affect a bookseller so intensely that they become a trembling, heat-seeking evangelist for it. Smith Henderson’s debut novel, Fourth of July Creek, did that to more than one of us here at Malaprop’s. Having an opportunity to meet the author of this mesmerizing novel on November 14 at 7 pm is not to be missed. Set in Henderson’s native Montana during the ’70s and ’80s, Fourth of July Creek explores the complexities of our nation’s disquieting and violent contradictions. According to The New York Times, “First novels don’t come much more confidently written or fully imagined than this.”

Then this:

Are you a fan of NPR’s The Thistle and Shamrock? You won’t want to miss meeting Fiona Ritchie, founder and host of NPR’s The Thistle & Shamrock, and Doug Orr, former Warren Wilson president and founder of The Swannanoa Gathering, as they join us on November 16 at 6 pm to discuss their book Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia. A beautiful book that includes a CD, Wayfaring Strangers includes interviews with many whose legacies are tied to this musical migration including Doc Watson, Sheila Kay Adams, and Pete Seeger. Musicians Al Petteway and Amy White will play music at the event and there will be a wine and cheese reception. A single ticket comes with the purchase of the book ($39.95), or a Bring-a-Friend package is available for $50 and includes one book and two tickets.

And finally this, from Caroline at Malaprop’s”

I am happy to remind you of an awesome event happening Thursday, November 6 at 9 am! Fabulous publisher reps Eileen, Toni, Doni, Eric, Frazer, and Marsha from Random House, Penguin, Harper Collins, Workman, and Ingram will be presenting some of their favorite selections for the Fall and Winter seasons! Please join us for this event- it is open to the public so invite all of your friends! We’ll have coffee and breakfast nibbles provided- so come with your list of holiday gift recipients and settle in to hear about the great new books out this season.

Why don’t you do a story on Pinups for Pit bulls history of not paying state sales tax. That would be a good story.
