Willow Koerber, a professional mountain bike racer who lives here in Asheville, is profiled in the June issue of Outside magazine. Koerber talks her racing, and her recovery — without surgery — from a torn ACL. Here’s more, from her web site:

2007 was a stellar season for the Asheville, NC native garnering two World Cup podiums and two additional top10’s. She was also named to the Beijing Olympic US long team and was the top American in international rankings. With renewed energy and focus for 2009, Willow has already notched a 6th place finish at the opening round of the World Cup in South Africa. Along with her cross country races, Willow is scheduled to showcase her superb descending and technical riding talents in several all-mountain competitions this season. Never one to shy away from the camera, Willow has also appeared in several ads and cycling calendars.

ten or twelve years ago when i raced mountain bikes i remember seeing Willow (and her brothers Sam and Ben) race on the same regional and state circuits i did. she was phenomenal then, and it’s great to see her being so successful after all the ups and downs the sport has experienced since. her family is definitely naturally talented when it comes to biking!
