The start of the new year has brought some tough news about restaurant closings around Asheville. The death toll so far: Steak & Wine, Sadie’s Seafood Pub, Fiddlin Pig, the Flying Frog and Chameleon Soul Food.

But the news isn’t all bad. Look for an Asheville Citizen-Times story coming up about the expansion of Fiore’s, run by Anthony Cerrato.

Cerrato is teaming up with a national company to open a restaurant called Blue Ridge Tavern in the Asheville Regional Airport. And he’s opening up Fiore’s South on Hendersonville Road, in a building where his dad used to run Bosco’s back in the day.

Also last week, the partners in the new Ruth’s Chris restaurant officially broke ground on that high-end eatery, which will be built near the entrance to the Biltmore Estate.

The only real surprise on the list of closing restaurants is the Flying Frog. That place always looked like it was packed to the gills on weekend nights.

surely the folks of WNC could come up with a better grass feed beef restaurant then a franchise. . .

A restaurant at the AVL airport?! Now that seems to be a sure recipe for disaster! Unless it's just a snack bar it will not work in the tiny AVL airport with so few passengers and flights. Sure hope it's not a full scale restaurant there.
