From Mackensy Lunsford at Asheville Scene on Burgermeister’s closing:
Burgermeister’s on Haywood Road in West Asheville will hold its last day of business July 13. The building has been purchased by two brothers who plan to open a gastropub there, said Chantal Saunders, co-owner of Burgermeister’s.
Though the deal was only made official yesterday, the staff was notified two weeks ago to give them time to look for new work, Saunders said.
“There are so many stories of restaurants closing where (the staff) shows up to work to a locked door, which is really not OK,” she said. “That’s not what we believe in. My business partner and I are looking forward to a break.”
Mackensey as usual has the facts wrong. They bought the business not the building, BM has been on sale for over a year, and it’s not going to be overpriced gastropub. Rather an affordable place with good food and great beer. I just tire of self acclaimed ‘reporters’ who can’t do basic research and get the story straight. Come on, how hard is it?
Will miss BM, one of the few places I could afford to eat at. The other places are so overrated and overpriced in wavl it’s ridiculous. Dinner for over 20 bucks, gimme a break. Working families can’t afford that.
Great service and food at Burgermeisters… the front of the house and back of the house. They will be missed!
On Haywood Road, we do have a dentist, music shops, ice cream parlor, outdoor gear, mechanic, an acclaimed music store, alternative medicine, dvd rental, some of the best tattoos and salons in town, schools, homesteading, cake shop, seamstress, lawyer, schools, florists, book binding, glass cutting and repair, letterpress, community radio, a design firm, community gardens, a library, aquarium supplies, breweries, venues, tailgate market, and sooo much more! Oh yeah, and for fashion: vintage, up-cycled, consignment, and designer. WAVL is not only home, it’s where it’s at!
While we do still need an Ethiopian restaurant and a Haywood Rd. sushi joint (hard to get to Green Tea on foot/bike), I agree that more diversity of business is needed in West Asheville. But what do we need… what are we looking for? I would say: drive-in or art-house movies in that weird used-to-be-Ingles-formerly-the-Rush building.
Gastropub or gastrolounge refers to a bar and restaurant that serves high-end beer and food.
Hope after a vacation that Burgermeisters finds a new location and reopens. Best burgers in town. They will be missed.
What we don’t need in West Asheville is anymore consignment stores, “healing” centers, pizza places, haircut places, and tatoo joints. Anything else would be welcomed.
lord – another yuppie hangout opens in the carcass of something worthwhile.
come back, west asheville. we miss you.
I went to BM once to see what the buzz was about. Not impressed with the food. Just another excuse to sell more beer. Not that I am against beer, but I agree there are way too many pubs in Asheville. West Asheville needs restaraunts that focus on the FOOD, not the drinks.
People in West Asheville don’t spend a lot of money so they come second when planning a business. West Asheville needs places that draw tourist from downtown etc. to survive. At the time that is Food and beer. If you don’t like the tourism direction that Asheville is taking to survive then move to Rosman, North Carolina where you will be happier.
No, I don’t think that’s actually the case–most WAVL restaurants that do well have die hard local crowds. UJ, Lucky Otter, tons of others.
The only places I can think that tourists go are Sunny Point, and occasionally the Admiral and Isis.
“People in West Asheville don’t spend a lot of money”, that’s not what I have observed.
let some of those pubs locate in east ashe. we need ’em over here.
I agree with you guys 100%. Haywood road needs more diversity. You can’t make every storefront on Haywood road a restaurant. People in West Asheville have more needs than just food and beer…
I love Burgermeisters. They will be missed.
This freaking sucks! I can’t believe Burgermeister is closing. I love this place. Best burgers in all of WNC! I agree with everybody else, WAY TOO MANY breweries, pubs, or WTF you want to call them. It’s over saturated as it is. I hope Burgermeister opens again.
the bubble on restaurants is going to burst, and soon. sad to see burgermeisters go.
I am so insanely sad! Our family loves Burgermeister! Always good. Always insanely friendly. and really, we need a gastropub like we need a hole in the head! Talk about a bandwagon people! People like to eat and drink over here but seriously! If someone wants to open some business, how about some retail of some kind?
“If someone wants to open some business, how about some retail of some kind?”….Totally agree. I was just saying the same thing today.
Please, please, please, something other than another dang pub! For a community that values diversity, we sure don’t have it when it comes to food in West Asheville. Argh!
A gastro pub? That sounds stupid as sh*t
