asheville_mall_general_2014Below find the press release that Asheville Mall Manager Jeff Washburn sent me this afternoon. As I reported previously, the Asheville Mall is up for a multi-million makeover as popular new retailer H&M moves in and opens up later this year. (The unconfirmed report is a $25 million renovation project.) It is just one of several big Asheville shopping centers that are scheduled to see millions of dollars of new investment pour in. Press release:

Asheville Mall announced today that H&M will open a 20,000+ square foot store located in between Regis hair salon and Banana Republic later this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in April and will generate local job growth with a mix of local and regional contractors for the project.

The store entrance will be on the interior of the mall and its store front will be more than 200 feet long.
H&M is a regional exclusive retailer for Asheville Mall with the closest store in Charlotte, NC.
“The addition of H&M truly complements the mall’s existing offerings and demonstrates CBL’s commitment to further enhancing the mall property. H&M has been one of the most highly requested stores at Asheville Mall.” said Jeff Washburn, General Manager of Asheville Mall.

The following retailer shift will take place in order to generate additional footage for the 20,000+ square foot retailer. Additionally, among the relocation of retailers in Asheville Mall, many will also be upgrading and constructing the latest store prototypes.

Finish Line will build a 7,000+ square foot new store next to Belk and Children’s Place. Finish Line will open its newest store prototype this summer.

Claire’s will build a 1,400+ square foot new store next to Best Buy. Claire’s is scheduled to open early April 2014.

As Seen on TV Plus has moved next to PS byAero and Radio Shack will open later this Spring with a 1,900+ square foot store.

“This is a very exciting project with lots of moving pieces. The process takes a while to trigger the timing of these store openings, lots of preparation, sort of like a “domino effect” of moving and relocating, requiring lots of coordination. Additional new store announcements are expected within the next 30 days.” Washburn added.

“H&M is one of the most sought after retailers which offer a broad range of fashion choices for women, men and children,” said Brenda McNeeley, Regional Marketing Director for CBL & Associates Properties, Carolina Region. “Every fashion conscious shopper in the Western NC region is going to love this new store.”

H&M PROJECT FACTS:
Project will be well over seven figures.

Store will occupy approximately 5,000 square feet that was previously used for storage.

This will be the largest store to open in the mall since Barnes and Noble opened in 2009.

H&M will serve as a magnet for shoppers and a springboard to attract more market savvy retailers.

H&M will better serve customer demand and improve the tenant mix.

Hell, if Radio Shack is coming in maybe I’ll give it a shot. Or maybe resurrect World Bazaar.

Im happy Radio Shack is coming. Would be nice for an arcade to come in, and have a ticket dispensing area for cash-in for prizes.

According to their Super Bowl commercials, the new Radio Shacks look very different, more like Apple computer stores.

You must be my age. My fondest childhood memories of the local mall (not here, BTW) were: video game arcades, the battery club and free comic books at Radio Shack, an attached theatre (only 2 screens, but the BEST movies shown), a hobby store, and a bookstore that sold British model airplane magazines with alternate decals for scale models.

This is what the mall needs regardless of what the haters say. H&M will attract competitors thus bringing more people to the area to shop and employ. Great news.
