Asheville has made a googlefiber.com list of 21 self-nominated cities to be included in a 30-day online poll asking voters to cast a ballot for the city most deserving of Google’s fiber initiative. It says something about Asheville that we’ve made the short list of cities included in the poll.

Now here’s a real chance for Asheville to show its online marketing power. Asheville tied with Portland in an online poll last year asking folks to vote for Beer City USA. Now Asheville has the chance to win a more serious designation. And instead of a silly little April Fool’s joke, this is serious business.

From googlefiber.com:

YouTube, Twitter and Facebook have been one of the major driving platforms wherein supporters uploaded videos, pitches, theme songs and spread messages & sparked discussions on Facebook and Twitter to get their voices heard.

But now is the time to really decide the Most Deserving City for Google Fiber. We want the most reactive, effort making and responsive city come out on top and win this Challenge and we have chosen probably the best and simplest method for deciding the winner. Open Polling.

We’re hosting an web based 30 day Polling for the title of “Most Deserving City for Google Fiber”. From our own analysis, we have shortlisted 21 U.S. cities that have nominated themselves for “Google Fiber” network and have also been making visible efforts to bring “Google Fiber” home.

Check out googlefiber.com for the rules on voting, as well as tips. Check it out. Vote it. Tweet it. Facebook it. There’s also a badge you can use to help spread the word (see it in the left-hand column on the bloggie here.)

"Asheville makes googlefiber.com short list for online poll asking folks to cast their ballots for city most deserving of Google fiber. "

So Ashevegas, is this site "not affiliated" (see ACT Article comments) or just unofficial? Are we being led down the garden path?

As someone who was a Telecommunication Field Engineer for over 23 years, I can attest to the fact that Telecommunications is one of the most important pieces of infastructure that can bring sustainable job growth to our area. We live in a time when companies must compete on a global level and every microsecond can count.

The ballot is a graphic which isn’t user-friendly to persons with vision problems as an internet "reader" doesn’t voice the selections. Would have thought that Google would be aware of this.

Please let people know that googlefiber.com is in no way affiliated with Google, and the listing in this poll is completely arbitrary in regards to actually being chosen by Google.
