asheville_free_media_2014Friends of Community Radio, the parent organization of Asheville Free Media, was recently granted an FCC license to broadcast on a low-power FM frequency. Now the organization is asking the public for $45,000 to help it pay for equipment and building expenses to get on the air.

More from Asheville Free Media’s crowd-funding page on indiegogo.com:

Asheville Free Media is ready for the FM dial! Broadcasting online since 2009, our programming is truly free-form, including jazz and comedy, pop and poetry, rock ‘n’ roll and sports talk, world music and anarchist news, blues and gardening, hip-hop and health, old-school country and a kids’ show, dance music and politics, live simulcasts and Spanish-language programming, with everything in between and more to come!

In the fall of 2013, Asheville Free Media applied for a license during the first Low-Power FM application window in over a decade. The Federal Communications Commission granted our construction permit, which means we can expand our mission to serve as a community radio station on the airwaves on 103.3 FM, at the full 100 watts, from atop the Hotel Indigo in downtown Asheville.

This is your chance to be part of the community that is Asheville Free Media! Your tax deductible donation will fund the equipment and building expenses needed to broadcast locally-produced, original programming onto the airwaves in Asheville, NC. Take a moment right now to donate to the cause, and join us in celebration as we take this next step!

There already is a local, community radio station in Asheville. Asheville Independent Radio. Check out 1350am for over 20 locally-produced shows weekly! Not an employee, just a fan of locally-based radio.

Don’t mean to quibble, but AFM isn’t asking for “public” money, which usually implies taxpayer funds in some way. They are asking for “private” donations.

From members of the general public, of course… But we all know that certain people will leap on that headline & read it the wrong way…

      Yes, Barry. You’re quibbling.
