Here’s some of what’s going around on the Asheville development front:

-The proposed Coxe/Asheland development, the largest mixed-use development downtown Asheville has seen in years, is set to be heard at the Asheville Planning & Zoning Commission meeting this evening (Wednesday, Nov. 6). It calls for a maximum of 500 apartments, a maximum of 90,000 square feet of retail space, and a parking deck with up to 1,000 parking spaces. At least 10 percent of the residential units will be designated as affordable units, offered at 80 percent AMI (area media income). Five percent of the units will accept housing vouchers. (More background here about the initial proposal, which has changed some.)

-Demolition of the former car dealership building at the corner of Patton and Clingman avenues has started. Duke Energy, which owns the property, plans to build a new electrical substation here.

-The Days Inn on Tunnel Road is exploring a conversion from a hotel to apartments, according to city building permits.

-The Cliffs has announced a new home-building program called Cliffs Builders, which will be entirely operated by The Cliffs and will expand to other communities within The Cliffs portfolio after the initial phase of development at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, according to a press release. Cliffs Builders recently broke ground on its first home within The Meadow neighborhood at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove just outside of Asheville. The program, which will be entirely operated by The Cliffs, will expand from The Cliffs at Walnut Cove to other communities within the portfolio and offer a range of options, from turn-key cottages clustered around amenities to higher-end spec homes with a variety of options including unique floor plans and interior packages. Cliffs Builders has engaged local architect Mel Dias to design the initial phase of development at The Meadow. The first home will feature modern design elements similar to other homes currently under construction at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove and will be completed in 12 months. Twenty additional homes will follow in The Meadow in a phased approach and will be released to the market starting in 2020. The new program will be led by Vice President of Operations Chris Calloway, who joined The Cliffs earlier this year, and Kevin C. Adams, The Cliffs’ new director of construction.

-The Radview project, a mixed-use proposal that calls for the construction of a 22,600-square-foot, 4-story building with 26 residential studio units, retail and office space, is scheduled to be heard at the Nov. 18 meeting of the Asheville Technical Review Committee. The location is 20 Artful Way, a location atop a knoll that overlooks the River Arts District. This project features two Asheville movers and shakers: the owner is Radview Asheville LLC, whose registered agent is Jeremy Goldstein, founding principal agent in the commercial real estate brokerage company G/M Property Group. He’s a member of the Asheville Riverfront Redevelopment Commission. The project architect, Laura Hudson, is chairwoman of the Asheville Planning & Zoning Commission.
