Asheville blogger’s project ‘A Letter a Day’ seeks to connect with childhood inspiration

Here’s the set-up: Asheville blogger Kipper Schauer, who also runs a popular trivia night in town, writes a letter a day to someone who inspired him. He sends a box of crayons, paper and a self-addressed stamp, too, and asks the recipient to draw him a picture and send it back.

Schauer is posting the letters on his blog, A Letter a Day. So far, he’s written everyone from John C. Reilly and Betty White to John McCain and Mr. T. More from the blog:

I was inspired to begin this project by my desire to take a moment out of each of my days to contact people that have inspired or affected my life in some manner, whether they be friends, family, or in the case of most of my letters a celebrity of some type.

It’s my personal belief that actors, musicians, politicians, and other figures that we have no personal contact with can shape and mold our lives just as much as a sibling or a friend. My hope with the A Letter A Day project is to establish contact with these people, even if it lasts only for a moment, and of course to ask them to draw me a picture.

Why a picture? Because it’s something real, it’s not a form letter or an autographed photo. It requires the addressee to take a moment from their lives to devote their thought and creativity to fulfilling a simple request.
