Highland Brewing highlights

Here are three great events from Highland Brewing, now celebrating its 21st year in Asheville. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Leah Wong Ashburn for the first time this week. I’ve met Leah in passing, but this was the first time we had a chance for some one-on-one time. Earlier this year Ashburn’s dad, Highland founder Oscar Wong, stepped back and Ashburn took the reins of the company. She’s excited about a big expansion underway, as well as other efforts on several fronts.

Highland weekend beer releases:

This weekend we are releasing a solid line up of small batch brews to help celebrate Valentine’s Day on Saturday, February 14th. Music that evening will be provided by Up Jumped Three and we will have local food trucks, Doc Brown & Smashbox.

Lyda My Life – Chocolate Milk Stout
CoCo Oh No Porter – Made with cocoa nibs and has a very subtle cherry finish.
Gettin’ Figgy Wit’ It – A mellow brown ale brewed with Fig Newtons.
Tony Kiss – Smooth brown ale brewed in your honor.
Hansel & Gret Ale – A malty brown ale spiced with vanilla, and both fresh and dried ginger.
Whiskey Barrel-Aged Black Mocha Stout – This beer spent three months in a whiskey barrel and picked up the oak and vanilla notes.

Flights of these beers will be available at $12.00 each.

Highland Community Night

We are also kicking off our monthly community night on Sunday, February 22nd. Once a month we will be featuring a local non-profit to help raise awareness about the important work that they do in our community and $1.00 per pint will go directly towards that organization, on top of receiving brewer tour donations for the entire month. This month we are working with Asheville Greenworks.

Highland Flights-n-Bites

On Thursday, Feb. 26 we have our first in a year long series called, Flights-n-Bites, where we pair up a flight of local craft foods with a flight of our own craft beer. This month we are working with Sunburst Trout Farms.

Oskar Blues beer dinner at Edison at Grove Park Inn

The Edison restaurant at the Grove Park Inn will play host to a tasty Oskar Blues beer dinner on Feb. 26. It will feature OB beers, including one brewed especially for this event, and a four-course dinner prepared by Chefs Philip Bollhoefer and Jake Schmidt. Cost is $60 per person and is all inclusive: dinner, paired beers, all taxes, and gratuity. Limited seating available. Call 828-210-7813 for reservations.

You’ll start off with hopped scallops, followed by Chub fried chicken, bacon wrapped Carolina bison meatloaf, and a Beeramisu. Four Oskar Blues beers will accompany the meal, a specialty blonde ale brewed exclusively for this dinner, Pinner Throwback IPA, Old Chub Nitro Stout, and what’s dessert without Ten Fidy Imperial Stout. I had the chance to sample the pairings, and I have to say it’s mighty tasty. Especially that Carolina bison. Check it out.

Twin Leaf outdoor seating

Just a quick note that Twin Leaf Brewery is planning a small expansion to its South Slope brewery. The plan is to create an outdoor seating area on the north side of the brewery, which sits at the corner of Coxe Avenue and Banks. There will be a new doorway cut into the side of the building. Stay tuned for more.
