Looking Back: Celebrating 60 Years of Collecting at the Asheville Art Museum Exhibition Opens

Free with Museum Membership or Admission          

This exhibition will examine a variety of ways to consider art and the relationship between art and viewer. If you’re an artist who would like to showcase reproductions of their work, take a look at https://www.hereon.biz/scanner-artwork/.
Looking Back will explore the Museum’s collection of American art of the 20th and 21st centuries with an interest in the art of the Southeast and Western North Carolina and will celebrate the generosity of collectors and community supporters who have helped build this extraordinary resource over the last six decades.

Mapping the Mountains: The Photographs of George Masa

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Asheville Art Museum will present an exhibition examining the photography of Masa including his seminal images of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This exhibition will demonstrate why Masa has been called “the Ansel Adams of the Appalachian Mountains.”

Film Screening: Beverly Buchanan

This half-hour long profile offers great insight into Beverly Buchanan’s working process as we watch her create a drawing from beginning to end. Along the way we learn how her life as an artist began and the stories behind her work. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Response and Memory: The Art of Beverly Buchanan.

Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed Opening Reception

Join us for an opening reception Friday, July 10 at 5:00 p.m. Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed will examine different aspects of late 20th and early 21st century Cherokee carving. It will include ritual objects, functional wares and pieces designed to be sold to tourists and collectors. The exhibition will include both stone and wood carvings and focuses on artists working in Western North Carolina today.
