There’s a new Web site focusing on the visual arts in Asheville, and if I know anything about the site’s creator, the site’s going to be a quality production. The site is called Audience/ The Asheville Arts Reviewaudienceasheville.com on the internets.

The creator is Dr. Arnold Wengrow, a mentor of mine who founded the theater at UNC Asheville back in 1970. I was a drama major at UNCA back in the day, and Dr. Wengrow taught me more than a thing or two about stagecraft.

After retiring in 1998, Wengrow became a writer. His visual arts features appear in the Asheville Citizen-Times and he is an editor for Theatre Design and Technology, a magazine published by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology.

Wengrow told me recently that his blog/zine hybrid will focus on the visual arts, serving up quality features and reviews in an arts town that, in my opinion, has a severe lack of such. Wengrow wants to give experienced writers with great art cred a platform to dig a little deeper into arts opinion and commentary than other media outlets might allow. In fact, he’s willing to pay writers.

Contact Wengrow at www.audienceasheville.com if you want to write, or if you have a story idea. And keep an eye on this site. It’s got the potential to be a powerful new platform for feedback in our arts community.

I didn’t know you were a drama major back in the day. My dear old dad is the current Chair of the Theatre Dept over at UNC-A. Arnold is the person who is directly responsible for my clan of Bowen’s having come to this valley some sixteen years ago.
I’ll have to go through the archives sometime and find some old photos of you in shows. 😉
