The Madeleine L’Engle sci-fi classic is 50?

Yep.

Asheville celebrates the 50th anniversary of a classic with author and illustrator Hope Larson, an Asheville native and Eisner award winner selected to recreate L’Engle’s young-adult novel as a comic. Larson’s book was just published on October 2, and it’s an honor for Asheville, her hometown, to host a signing.

And since in the 50 years since its publication the novel has never been illustrated, its an honor for Asheville’s Larson to take on the charge of visually recreating a classic.

The author has already received a rave review in an L.A. Times book blog: ‘A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel’: Hope Larson inks a classic

Larson has appeared in Ashvegas before: Graphic artists’ ode to Bear Creek Apts and the West Asheville goat house

From a Spellbound Children’s Bookshop press release:

Spellbound is thrilled to welcome Asheville native Hope Larson as we celebrate the release of her new graphic novel adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel A Wrinkle in Time. In 50 years of publication, the book has never been illustrated. Now, Larson takes the classic story to a new level.
50 Years

In honor of the 50th anniversary of WIT, Madeleine L’Engle’s estate approved the graphic novel adaptation and L’Engle’s longtime publisher, Farrar Strauss Giroux, chose Larson to take on this landmark project.

Art Contest

Leading up to our  book release party with Hope Larson on October 6th, Spellbound is sponsoring an art contest for WIT fans at local schools. During the month of September, students in grades 4-8 at local schools can enter to win a FREE copy of the new WIT graphic novel autographed by Hope Larson. Details will be available at your school library by September 1.

Book Party

Our event on Saturday, October 6th kicks off at 1:00pm. In addition to meeting Hope and getting a signed book, you can also participate in WIT-themed activities and enter a door prize drawing for a WIT 50th Anniversary poster.  The winners of the art contest will be announced at the event.
