Julie Martin, a former editor and managing editor at the Asheville Citizen-Times, has lost her job as managing editor of the Wilmington Star-News. That newspaper’s columnist Si Cantwell notes it in a column about recent changes at the Wilmington newspaper:

Julie Martin was our managing editor. She supervised our local news coverage and was a tireless force in urging reporters to dig deeper, to do more investigative pieces. On a personal note, she was my immediate supervisor. We had the third annual StarNews Conscience Fair on Feb. 6, giving 75 nonprofits a chance to talk about their volunteer opportunities with more than 600 visitors. The Conscience Fair was Julie’s idea, as was the annual Voices of Conscience series that recognizes outstanding volunteers during the Christmas season.

The changes including moving a reporter to staff a Raleigh bureau. The newspaper also cut its photo editor position. Robyn Tomlin, former reporter and city editor at the Citizen-Times, is executive editor at the Wilmington newspaper.

Julie is one damn fine journalist. She’ll be missed.

Thanks, Jason. You’re doing some excellent work here with this blog. I check it often to see what spicy stew you’ve got simmering on the stove. The mix of original local reporting and good reads from elsewhere is fascinating. Keep going. I think you’ve figured things out.
