How’s everybody doing with the Big Thaw? I’ve been loving it, though my productivity at work seems to have suffered a bit. Maybe it’s the bursting Bradford pears. Maybe it’s the cacophony of street musicians distracting me on my walks downtown. Maybe it’s the call of the sidewalk cafe.

One thing’s for sure — the warm weather hasn’t slowed down city street crews. I swear that every downtown street is clogged with giant construction equipment, orange barrels and hardhat-wearing workers just tearing up every curb, gutter and water pipe they can get their hands on. And now it looks like that work is hitting Merrimon near the intersection with Broadway. What fun!

I must rant once more about the still unfinished Pack Square. It is totally unacceptable that this work has gone on for years now and is still under construction. Sadly, I can’t envision how the "new" Pack Square and City/County Plaza will be much improved from what was there before.

I think Asheville has been secretly trying to supplant Chapel Hell as Construction capitol of NC. I would’ve said supplant Greensboro, but at least Greensboro sees even occassional progress and construction completions.

Warmer weather has brought out some interesting lawn decorations in Weaverville: http://myweaverville.com/2009/03/11/political-effigies/
