WCQS listeners will soon wake up to a new voice on weekday mornings. After an extensive search, WCQS/Western North Carolina Public Radio hired Greta Johnsen as Morning Edition host /reporter. She’ll begin her new duties July 22nd.

Johnsen comes to WCQS from WBEZ in Chicago. A native of Alaska, she is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Minnesota. After college, she moved back to the arctic to serve as operations manager and Morning Edition host at KUAC in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2011, she moved to Chicago, where she earned a Master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University while hosting weekends at WBEZ.

WCQS News Director, David Hurand, says “Greta is an experienced host and reporter and we are very pleased she has accepted our offer to join the WCQS team.” Program Director, Barbara Sayer, echoes the sentiment, “Greta’s talent, enthusiasm, energy and curiosity will propel our effort to expand our regional news reporting in a meaningful way.”

Of Western North Carolina and WCQS, Johnsen says, “I’m delighted to be a part of such a unique and welcoming community, and I can’t wait to contribute to the station.”

WCQS would also like to express its appreciation to interim host Ken Adams. David Hurand says, “Ken is one of the most talented, creative people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. We appreciate his ongoing dedication to WCQS.”

WCQS airs NPR’s Morning Edition Monday through Friday from 5 – 9 a.m.

    Well I certainly love the syndicated programs that WBEZ produces (This American Life & Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me). Seems like someone with experience at that station should be a great thing for WCQS & Asheville.
    (Because no offense, as great at WCQS is, imho we could use a just a little less classical music programming.)
