Go say it to their faces. The people who wrote such mean-spirited and offensive comments on this site should move to another state. It’s real easy to sit behind your computer and insult someone you have never met. These are your neighbors, doing their jobs, and feeding their families. How disgusting. How insensitive. Mike, thank you for doing a good job, and I hope you find success. To the rest of the crew, keep up the good work. There are many decent people out here that appreciate what you do, everyday. Look, I hate to be mean so lets pretend I’m being nice; Karen Wynn is s….no, I shouldn’t be in a QG Magizine or an American Eagle magizine and maybe possibly Karen Wynn shouldn’t be on the televiSSSSion or any radio SSSSSStationSSSSSSS. S. BUCKNER I totally agree with your statement. Karen Wynn is undoubtedly the worst person I’ve ever seen on TV. It’s as if she is talking to a bunch of Kindergarten kids. Her sing song voice is nerve grating. Mike Cuevas is the best weather forecaster WLOS has ever had. I’m curious as to why he left and more (my guess, better offer) curious as to why WLOS can’t see Karen Wynn’s very poor performance. She seems a nice person but not for TV. Does she not see replays of her performance?????? More important; Is WLOS not aware of her presentation?????? Strange they allow this to go on.

i was born here. i grew up on the same street that bob caldwell lived on for years. he is a has been that should have been gotten rid of years ago. now he is stuck doing car commercials for a company that rips people off. yep. thats the kind of guy i want setting the standard.
what % of the responses here are from asheville natives. im going to venture and guess less than 10% just by reading what people have written. its the out of state idiots that have moved into this area that have wrecked it for us natives. just like its the out of state idiots that have wrecked this topic.
Let’s face it, WLOS is one of those local stations that will only attract and keep second-stringers who would never make it in a metropolitan market. Take Jay Silzer, for example–his high-pitched feminine voice would never make it on CNN or the Weather Channel. Larry Blunt looks like a pro wrestler reject and Julie Wunder’s grin looks like the Joker (Jack Nicholson) has been working on her,
Wake up Western North Carolina–you are not Atlanta, Chicago or LA. You are not even Boise or Topeka! Your TV people will always be ne’er do wells. Accept it!
I dont care what he looked like its all about the job he had done.I think he was better than most we have had here. I dont want some pretty boy i would rather have someone who can do the job.Grow up people and be adults.
All the negative comments about Mike Cuevas are ridiculous. I’ve traveled and lived all over the United States and Mike Cuevas is one of the best weather forecaster I’ve ever seen. WLOS has some of the worst meteorologists I’ve ever seen (two grinning silly women) Mike gives the weather without all the stupid grinning and phony junk, he is outstanding without all the silly stuff. I’m sorry to see him leave and will miss him greatly. When I watch the weather report I don’t want to see anything but straight intelligent information. If there is anything that turns me to another station it’s silly women grinning like they are teenagers and the public is a bunch of high school kids. I would guess Mike moved on to better things, he is that good, and I know some tv station grabbed him. What a bunch of slow minded comments this crowd shows, if you people want Disney Land weather reporters try 24/7 of the two silly women meteorologists and you will beg for another weather reporter just like Mike Cuevas. Lucky station that gets him he is great.
The month is now over and Mike hasn’t been on air in over a week. has he already packed his bags and gone home?

I’m a North Carolinian who lives out West now… but grew up in Western North Carolina.
I can’t tell you how truly dissapointed and saddened I am by a majority of your posts. What a horrible bunch of haters you guys are. You don’t have to love the guy or his presentation… but the cheap and slanderous personal attacks you’ve made against Mike Cuevas are deplorable.
His resume and educational background are outstanding. I’m sorry a BS in Meterorology from the University of Kansas is pretty solid. And with just a little effort to educate oneself… the vagaries of any forecast area can be easily understood. I would guess after six years in the Asheville market he was getting it down pretty good.
I’ve spent the last 18-years working in television news in both Carolinas as well as California and Nevada. It’s been a great career… exciting and fun. Most of us relish our roles in the communities we work in. And most of us make every effort we can… to do the best job possible for the people who graciously invite us into their homes on a nightly basis.
Just a thought. But something you might want to think about the next time you decide to defame a person you’ve likely never met or really know anything about.
The community that I grew up in… and the people who helped raise me in the mountains of North Carolina were a much kinder and caring folk.
With today’s economic climate, it’s tough for someone to lose their job if this is the case. I hate to see anyone lose their job. Remember, Mr Cuevas is supporting a family and broadcast jobs are drying up!
If you look back over the past 10 years, there’s a string of weather people who’ve been "shown the door" or who have exited for "greener pastures" from WLOS. Cuevas may be the latest in this growing list.
As for a possible replacement. I only hope it’s person who knows about WNC weather and can handle severe weather. Not a "pretty boy or girl" but someone who truely knows the science!
I wish Frank Kracher were a meteorologist. Anything to get one of the best back on the air at WLOS. Maybe Larry Blunt can do weather? That would open up the more important anchor seat next to Darcel. It is about time Cuevas AND Blunt headed elsewhere.

Mike Cuveas is an ok meteorologist and a terrible tv personality. Its like he is flirting with the camera. Really creepy stuff.
Mike DOES sort of look like he sucks lemons before going on the air.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with anything that has been said about Mike Cuevas. Folks have the right to give their opinion and I take no offense.
Mike Cuevas is not one of the best people I’ve seen doing weather on tv. He does look like he wears a lot of makeup and comes across as very cold and impersonal on the news. I hope they replace him with someone who really knows a lot about weather here in the mountains.

Ash, I usually like what you write here and read quite often. I don’t personally know Mike, but how can you post what Charles said about him? A molester? I understand he has kids and I know I wouldn’t want my kids coming across a note written about their Father like that. If Mike leaving was not his choice, maybe he will lose his house and who knows what else in this rotten economy. I know from personal experience how hard that can be. Seriously Ash, I thought you screened these messages?
The forecast is bright and sunny for WNC if indeed Mike Cuevas is leaving Channel 13. This guy is so annoying, and he looks so creepy. Julie Wunder is about as bad, but at least she looks better than Creepy Cuevas.
I love Bob Caldwell and miss him doing the weather. He worked at Channel 13 for decades and became part of the fabric of Western NC.
Let’s face it, all these guys do is read the forecasts from the National Weather Service. It’s not like they are doing detailed weather analysis.
Drew, if Bob Caldwell is the measuring stick for TV weather…then everyone gets a passing grade.
Anyway…if you read Mike’s bio, his current position at WLOS is his first ever as Chief Met. he has done a pretty decent job holding that title. While Mike never got to work during any major winter storms, he did provide weather analysis for the 2004 coverage of Frances and Ivan.
Cuevas isn’t all fluff like Bettes was when he worked at WLOS. Cuevas was one that had the right persona for severe weather situations, he gave the appropriate information and didn’t go overboard.
My guess is that they’ll go fluff again with their new Chief Met…my advise would be to go young and find someone who would want to establish theirselves and build a traidtion.

Not good news. One of the best and best looking weather guy we have had in a long time. I’m sure he will go on to a bigger and better place. Mike, you will be missed.

Mike Cuevas is one of the worst weather forecasters anywhere. He looks creepy, seems to have little real knowledge of meteorology, has an awkward on-camera presence, and is generally hard to watch. But then, he’s fit in just fine at WLOS for a while now and that says a lot about how poor Channel 13 really is as a tv news organization. I can’t imagine Cuevas is moving up to a larger tv market, so it’s likely that his contract was not renewed.
I saw former WLOS weather man Mike Bettes on NBC’s "Today" show several mornings this week. Bettes has done well at The Weather Channel (which is now owned by NBC Universal) but he is not as polished as some of the other personalities they have filling in for Al Roker.
Jason Boyer, who used to be at WLOS, was excellent and is now the meteorologist on one of the stations in Denver.
Bob Caldwell will always be the standard by which tv weather forecasters are measured in Asheville and WNC.
This is great news! No more smugness from our weathersource.
It would be nice if they would find someone local (like the guy who does Ray’s Weather, Dr. Ray Russell or any of the other five mountain meteorologists who work for that site). No outsider can understand this area’s very changeable weather right off the bat.
Of course, it will help if she’s blond and attractive and has an IQ lower than the temperature.
