From loyal reader Amy, a parent at Vance Elementary School:

Hey Ashvegas!

I’m not sure if you are aware of the huge cob shed project that has been going on up at Vance Elementary over the past year, but it has been a labor of love for the West Asheville community. I know that you just wrote an article about West Asheville and why it may or may not be one of the great neighborhoods of the Southwest.

I am a proud West Ashevillian, and the thing I can point to that sets the West Asheville neighborhoods apart from other areas is the intense sense of community here. The Vance Elementary community is a huge reason why I can’t imagine raising my son anywhere else. The dedication of the parents and staff at Vance is something I have never experienced before. Over the past year they have focused their energy on the construction of a large cob shed, to be the jewel of the Vance Peace Garden. All of the kids had the opportunity to both learn about the process of cobbing and other green building practices and to get their shoes off and get dirty doing some of the cobbing themselves.

I wanted to extend an invitation to the dedication event to you and hope that you’ll come and see one of the reasons West Asheville is so unique and amazing.

Next Tuesday morning, June 9, at 10 a.m. the Vance Elementary School community will be dedicating our Garden Shed at the Vance Peace Garden. We have worked on this garden shed, cobbing it from the ground up, for more than a year now. More than 1000 volunteers have gotten muddy and learned about the sustainable art of building with cob through this effort! It’s an amazing piece of functional art, and we’re all very excited.

Representatives from Lowe’s, Progress Energy, the ACS Foundation, the school district, and of course Parent Team members will be present. I hope you’ll be able to make it, too!

Thanks and take care!

amy.

Ooops. I meant "one of the great neighborhoods of the SouthEAST", not "Southwest". Sorry, Ash.
